Angelina Jolie managed to hold off a horde of zombies at the box office this weekend with Walt Disney Pictures’ Maleficent: Mistress of Evil taking the #1 spot with an estimated $36 million domestically. While this was enough to win the weekend, it was far short of expectations for the $185 million budgeted sequel, and only half of the $69.4 million the first Maleficent made for its 2014 opening. It looks like it will still do quite well overseas, taking in $117 million internationally for a $153 million global total. Given that this was Jolie’s first live-action film in four years, it proves she’s still a bankable enough name to open a picture.Warner Bros.’ dark DC Comics one-off Joker continues to hold strong in the #2 spot for its third weekend in theaters, taking in an estimated $29.2 million for a domestic total of $247.2 million and a worldwide cume of $737.5 million. That puts the $55 million budgeted Todd Phillips movie ahead of worldwides on Man of Steel and Justice League, now gunning to pass Suicide Squad and (potentially) Wonder Woman in the coming weeks!Coming in at #3 is Sony’s ten-years-later sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, which grossed on the high-end of its opening weekend estimates with a $26.7 million opening. The original Zombieland opened at #1 ten years ago with $24.7 million, but against far less competition. This is another win for R-rated comedies this year after Good Boys. The film took in only $5.3 million overseas for a worldwide total of $32 million.MGM’s animated The Addams Family continues to do robust business as we near Halloween, making the #4 slot in its second weekend with $16 million for a $56 million domestic total so far. The studio has already greenlit a sequel for release in 2021!Paramount’s underperforming Will Smith vehicle Gemini Man fell from #3 to #5 on its second weekend, with the Ang Lee-directed film taking in $8.5 million for a domestic total of $36.5 million. Smith is still strong overseas where it sits at $82.2 million for a worldwide cume of $118.7 million, though it may not be enough to take the expensive film into the black when it finishes its run.At the specialty box office Fox Searchlight’s JoJo Rabbit opened big with $350 thousand in just 5 locations, giving it the biggest per-theater average of the week, a great start for the Taika Waititi anti-hate satire. A24’s The Lighthouse starring Robert Pattinson also did well with $419 thousand in 8 locations.

The actress, 44, - who split from Brad, 55, in September 2016 - hadn't been on screen in four years when she returned to shoot Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. And Angelina admitted it took her some time to 'feel the strength' of the dark fairy once again. 'The last few years have not been the easiest, I have had my ups and downs, I haven’t felt very strong so, there’s something when you are not feeling very strong where you push yourself,' she told The Sun. Angelina continued: 'We all have our difficult times, it's very similar to my character in the film, my strength is from my children, I didn’t work, the kids needed me at home.Anyone who is a parent knows there is a strength within you that grows when you just have to survive anything to be strong enough for them and you have to pull them through anything.' Angelina added fame is not important to her children and that they like to lead live a relatively normal life. Angelina and Brad married in August 2014 after 10 years together but Angelina filed for divorce in September 2016.A judge granted them both legal single status while finalizing their divorce. The former lovebirds have agreed on a custody agreement for their kids and are currently sorting out property and finances, specifically who gets Miraval, their French winery and the place they tied the knot.According to The Blast, Brad filed documents to the court asking to appoint a private judge to enable their discussions to continue, a request the star agreed with. The LA County Court agreed, as long as the pair paid for the judge's time themselves, and a stipulation order was put in place to 'Extend Appointment of Privately Compensated Temporary Judge.' She previously told Madame Figaro magazine her split from Brad was 'a complicated moment' and that she 'didn't recognize herself anymore.' Angelina said the moment when her 'relationship was coming to an end' was when she 'had lost' herself a bit.On the separation: 'I felt a deep and genuine sadness, I was hurt,' and that she felt 'smaller, almost insignificant, even if it wasn't necessarily obvious.

Marcheline battled ovarian cancer for seven years before she died from the disease in 2007 at the age of 56.A source previously told People magazine of the couple: 'They’re very close, and Jacqueline is someone Angelina has admired for a long time. And of course, there is the connection to her mom.' Looking every inch the movie star, Angelina covered up in a long, black wool coat, which she teamed with smart black court shoes. She donned a delicate layer of make-up while her brunette tresses were elegantly styled. Meanwhile, Jacqueline, 75, looked stylish in leather look black leggings, black boots and a black coat. Jacqueline later discussed her godchild's health woes.Speaking to The Telegraph in 2015, she went on: 'I’ve been thinking about her recently, all those operations she has had for her health...'It was very decisive to do that. I was very impressed. I don’t know if I would have done but given her circumstances, with six children, the biggest motivator must be that she should be there. I was very fond of her mother...'She worked so hard of trying to take care of some aspects of Angelina’s life and I don’t think it was very easy...'I met her when I was working with Jon Voight [Angelina's dad] in Switzerland on a film directed by Maximilian Schell. He was the other godparent. He passed away a few years ago.'Their outing comes after Angelina recently confessed that she felt 'pretty broken' after 'a few years of difficulty', after she opened up about reprising the role of Maleficent after a four year break from acting. The movie star said of her returning to Maleficent: 'It was a tough time. I'd been coming off a few years of difficulty, and I was not feeling very strong. Both their parents are A list movie stars who have made a fortune in action films. But still, none the six children that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have raised together plan on following in their very well heeled footsteps.'None of my kids want to be actors,' the Oscar-winning beauty told People on Wednesday when promoting her new film Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil. The Salt star then added, 'They're into business, humanitarian affairs, things like that,' she added.Angelina is the mother of six children - Maddox, 18, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and 11-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox - who she shares with ex-husband Pitt. And she said even though she has presented opportunities for her children to work as actors, none of them were 'interested.'Her daughter Vivienne played a young Aurora in the first Maleficent to which Angelina said: 'Viv still can't believe I made her a princess,' said the former Beverly Hills High School student. And she said even though she has presented opportunities for her children to work as actors, none of them were 'interested.'Her daughter Vivienne played a young Aurora in the first Maleficent to which Angelina said: 'Viv still can't believe I made her a princess,' said the former Beverly Hills High School student. On Thursday Angelina said that parenting has become her most important priority, taking precedent over her film career. The actress, 44, spoke candidly about wanting to focus on 'raising her children well', as she made an appearance at the Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil press conference in London.Discussing her goals for the future, Angelina said: 'I feel I like being an artist [is important] of course, but I’d like the other aspects of my work to take over my life a little bit more in the years ahead. 'Really I just want to raise my children well, they’re all at those very special ages where you don’t want to miss a moment and just get it right before they’re out in the world on their own and having to face it. 'You hope you get all the good stuff in, so that’s my main focus. But I have some other crazy ideas for future things, let’s see what happens.' The former couple split in 2016 and although they were declared legally single earlier this year, their marriage still hasn't been officially dissolved yet.
Angelina also discussed parenthood while speaking with MailOnline at the Disney film's premiere on Wednesday night.Talking about what she thinks the film says about the theme, Angelina noted: 'That [parenthood is] not easy, that even Maleficent can have trouble and worry whether she’s a good enough mum. 'I think what it means to be a mum and I think in her mind she has this idea, I did before I had kids, that to be a perfect mother we have to be a perfect person. that’s not true.'You just have to do your best and be willing to put your child before you, and I think she has that. So she loves being a mum, I love being a mum.' Disney beginners may not recall that Maleficent is the evil fairy in the classic 1959 animation Sleeping Beauty, and that Angelina played her in a 2014 live-action film.Just five years on, Jolie is playing her again in Mistress Of Evil, still wearing black horns, fighting fairies and sorting out her conflicted maternal feelings towards sweet Princess Aurora (Fanning). This time she has competition from the neighbouring Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) who causes a rift between our anti-heroine and Aurora, when her son Prince Phillip returns to the kingdom and proposes to the Princess.Unbeknown to Aurora, Ingrith is plotting to use their marriage to divide humans and fairies forever, and it is up to Maleficent to try and stop the impending war.Chiwetel Ejiofor joins the cast as the leader of an army of fairies just like Maleficent, while Harris will replace Brenton Thwaites as Prince Phillip. The original 2014 film grossed a whopping $758million worldwide, and brought another success addition to Disney's series of dark fairy tales.Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will hit UK and US theatres on October 18th.
