Angelina Jolie and her son Maddox were among the high-profile names to attend the White House state dinner in the nation's capitol on Wednesday. This year, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife Kim Keon-hee in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-ROK alliance. Angelina, 47, and her eldest child, 21, were dressed to the nines for the lavish affair and had the pleasure of witnessing President Yoon belt out Don McLean's 1971 hit American Pie.Maddox - who was adopted by the actress from Cambodia in 2002 - is very familiar with South Korea after studying biochemistry at Yonsei University in Seoul. Angelina flew to South Korea to send her son off to college in August 2019.Although he 'got accepted to other universities,' Maddox ultimately decided that Yonsei was the right fit for him, as reported by PEOPLE at the time. Along with biochemistry courses, the outlet claimed that Maddox was 'studying Korean language.' But Maddox's study abroad was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced him to trade in-person classes for online school. As a result, he returned to his family home in Los Angeles in March 2020, according to Angelina, who opened up about her son's education in an interview with Extra that year. Because his classes remained on Korea time, the Changeling star revealed that Maddox had no choice but to become a night owl. 'He had to stay back from Korea. He's going online, and so I think he starts at 6pm at night,' she told the outlet. Maddox eventually retuned to South Korea in March of 2021 after a year of remote learning. The Sun reported in 2021 that classes - specifically 'labs, studio and field study courses' - recommenced that April.Angelina previously gushed over her son's ambitious academic pursuits to PEOPLE in 2019, telling the outlet that she is 'nothing but proud' of him. She added: 'I look forward to all he will do.' It's unclear whether or not Maddox has officially completed his degree at Yonsei.
For Wednesday's White House state dinner, the mother-son duo walked into the Oval Office arm-in-arm. Angelina looked radiant in an off white, vintage Chanel blazer worn over a flowy white dress with a deep V-neckline. The Hackers star accessorized with a strand of large pearls and matching drop earrings. Her light brunette hair fell onto her shoulders in loose curls and her famously plump pout was painted bright red. Maddox cut a stylish figure for the occasion by wearing a fitted black peacoat over a white button-down shirt and tie. He slipped on slender trousers and black dress shoes to complete his White House look.Angelina looked all too proud to be attending the annual soiree with her son by her side. Friendship and cooperation were the theme of President Yoon's visit, which included a new military pact to counter the growing nuclear threat to North Korea; an Oval Office meeting between the two leaders; a formal welcome ceremony on the South Lawn; and a visit to the Korean Warm memorial. At the dinner, held in the East Room of the White House under the hundreds of cherry blossoms decorating the area, Biden toasted their relationship as 'allies and friends' and Yoon described it as an 'ironclad alliance,' despite leaked documents suggesting the U.S. was spying on Seoul. Along with Angelina and Maddox, home improvement stars Chip and Joanna Gaines and one Congressional Republican - Sen. Mitt Romney, who voted in favor of former President Donald Trump's impeachments - were among the famous attendees. Angelina and the Gainses were seated at the head table, as well as Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, Romney and departing Amb. Susan Rice, who has been serving as the Director of the Domestic Policy Council. The menu for Wednesday's dinner was designed by Chef Edward Lee, a Korean-American chef who's known for infusing traditional American classics with Korean flavors. The entertainment portion of the evening consists of Broadway stars Norm Lewis, Lea Salonga and Jessica Vosk performing American musical classics. Angelina shares Maddox, as well as sons Pax, 19, Knox Léon, 14, and daughters Zahara, 18, Shiloh, 16 and Vivienne, 14, with her ex-husband Brad Pitt. Maddox, Pax and Zahara are all adopted. Maddox was adopted as an infant by Angelina in 2002 - prior to her relationship with Brad.In 2006, Brad legally adopted Maddox and his last name was changed to 'Jolie-Pitt.' Angelina and Brad, 58, split in 2016 after just two years of marriage but over a decade together. They are still in the midst of a contentious divorce and it's been alleged that a 'physical altercation' between Brad and Maddox in 2016 was the final straw for Angelina. It's also been alleged that Maddox later testified against his adoptive father as part of the former couple's ongoing divorce proceedings, which involves hashing out custody and the division of assets.

Ice cream is President Joe Biden's favorite dessert. Lee, who has appeared on Top Chef and owns restaurants in Washington D.C. and New York, created about a dozen dishes for Jill Biden and her team to try in order to come by the final menu. 'I wanted to take some of my favorite American foods and just tinker with it a little bit. And this is also how I cook in my restaurants - to just add a little bit of Korean touches to it. Where again, it's familiar yet unexpected, and it's not traditional Korean food, but it just gives you a little hint of Korean flavors,' he said. He said the first person he told about being asked to be guest chef for the evening was his mom, an immigrant from Korea.'We've always felt this huge debt of gratitude to the United States of America for the opportunities that they've had, that I've been able to have. So to come full circle, and to give back and be able to do this was, you know, a very proud moment for me and also for my mom,' he said. And as for the advice his mom gave him: 'She just said don't mess it up.'

Angelina Jolie shared her new interview with Bibi Aisha - the young woman whose shocking 2010 cover on Time Magazine lifted the veil on the plight of many women in Afghanistan. The Maleficent star, 47, sat down to speak with Bibi, 30, for another Time story - which she shared to her Instagram on Tuesday - where they discussed how she overcame being horribly mutilated by her husband under Taliban rule. When Aisha was 14, her father promised her in marriage to a Taliban fighter to pay a debt. She was handed over to his family who abused her and forced her to sleep in the stable with the animals. When she attempted to flee, she was caught and her nose and ears were hacked off by her husband as punishment. 'They abused me every day. I didn’t have any rights,' Bibi told the Hollywood star, recounting how she then ran away, but was eventually sent back. She made international headlines in 2010 when she appeared on the now-iconic cover of Time magazine with a gaping wound in the center of her face where a nose should be. Bibi had since underwent 31 surgeries and told Angelina she plans on becoming a nurse so that she can 'help people.' 'This is my goal. I want to become a nurse to help people. I’ve had 31 surgeries, which means I have a lot of experience in the medical world. I want to help people who are hurting and say to them, if I could get through my darkest hours, you can.' Bibi started out the interview recalling her tragic story and how she was mutilated by her husband and other Taliban members after her failed escape attempt. 'My so-called husband came by and took me to the mountains. They tied my hands and my feet. And they cut my first ear, and then another ear and then my nose. And then he said, "We don’t care about you. We want to leave you here to die."' Despite being left for dead in the mountains, Bibi survived and was eventually brought for treatment to an American military base. 'They treated me like a family member. They saved my life. Someone in America accepted my case and said they would do my surgery.' 'I spent nine months in a shelter. I had no idea what would happen to me. And suddenly TIME magazine came to me and took my picture. They opened the door for me.' Angelina interjected: 'It caused outrage of course, because people saw what was done. And then we are now, many years after, at seeing those same people that harmed you are in charge of the country. And all that we then learned and were outraged about, we know is happening every day.' Bibi then stressed the importance of education: 'It's very important, education. My grandmother told me "Someone can take everything away from you, but one thing they can't take away from you is knowledge."' The new interview comes after Angelina's visit to Iraq. The Oscar-winning actress posted several images to her Instagram page earlier this month from the war-torn country. 'An emotional day with my friend @Nadia_Murad, who I was honored to spend the day with in Sinjar in Iraq,' began the mother of six, who had tears in her eyes in the images. The Salt star said that her Nobel Price laureate friend Nadia is doing so much through Nadia's Initiative to help the Yazidi people and other communities. The people in Sinjar are recovering after struggling through 'conflict and genocide,' noted Jolie. 'She took me to the home she grew up in Kocho village,' began the ex-wife of Brad Pitt. She added her pal took her to her old school where ISIS mil itants separated women and men before enslaving and mass murdering them. The red carpet favorite added that 'many are still missing and the fight for justice continues.' Her hashtags included one for Yazidi genocide.'

Angelina Jolie and the United Nations' refugee agency are parting ways after more than two decades. In a joint statement issued Friday, the actress, 47, and the agency announced she was 'moving on' from her role as the agency's special envoy 'to engage on a broader set of humanitarian and human rights issues.'Jolie, whose ex Brad Pitt was seen attending the Babylon premiere Thursday with new love Ines de Ramon, said; 'I will continue to do everything in my power in the years to come to support refugees and other displaced people.' She added she felt it was time 'to work differently' by directly engaging with refugees and local organizations.Jolie first started working with the U.N. refugee agency in 2001 and was appointed its special envoy in 2012 - she was among the most high-profile of the organization's ambassadors. The star 'carried out more than 60 field missions to bear witness to stories of suffering as well as hope and resilience', said the U.N, and had most recently traveled to Burkina Faso.U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said: 'After a long and successful time with UNHCR, I appreciate her desire to shift her engagement and support her decision.'I know the refugee cause will remain close to her heart, and I am certain she will bring the same passion and attention to a wider humanitarian portfolio.' In an opinion piece published in The Guardian last month, Jolie alluded to frustration with the lack of global progress in ending sexual violence in conflict.'We meet and discuss these horrors and agree that they should never be allowed to happen again. We promise to draw - and to hold - that line. But when it comes to hard choices about how to implement these promises, we run into the same problems time and again,' she wrote, specifically calling out U.N. Security Council members for 'abusing their veto power.'Jolie began visiting refugee camps in 2001, and was appointed as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador that same year. At the time, the then-high commissioner said he hoped the then-26-year-old actress could direct young people's attention to the plight of refugees. In response to a request for additional comment, the agency declined to offer further details, including whether they would appoint another special envoy to replace Jolie.Meanwhile Angelina's split from Brad has been acrimonious, as the pair have been battling over custody of their six kids and business ventures.Brad and Angelina met in 2005 on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith, playing a bored married couple who discover they are both assassins hired by competing agencies to kill one another. At the time he was married to Aniston. Brad and Angie married at Chateau Miraval in 2014 and parented six kids – three biological and three adopted – who are now aged between 14 and 21.Brad and Angie were ruled legally single in 2019 – but are still sorting out their labyrinthine financial affairs and custody arrangements to this day. They have been locked in a legal battle of the Chateau Miraval, a 35-room estate and celebrated vineyard in the south of France that Pitt and Jolie bought for $60 million in 2011.
