Angelina Jolie's guide was dramatically ordered to register at a war conscription office during her visit to frontline regions of Ukraine on a UN humanitarian mission. The Hollywood star, 50, was being escorted by Dmytro Pyshchikov, 33, when they were stopped at a checkpoint in Pivdennoukrainsk, in the south of the country, on November 5. During this checkpoint stop, guards reportedly found his documents showed he had no grounds for deferment from military service. Despite the bodyguard's claims that he was escorting an 'important person' he was still taken to the local Territorial Recruitment Centre [TRC] - which handles enlistment for fighters defending Ukraine from Russian aggression. His loved ones say they now cannot contact him. Pyshchikov's girlfriend Yulia Lotytska told local media: 'He called me [on November 5]. I texted him several times before that, he didn't answer. 'Then I decided to call, his phone was turned off. And he called after a while, told me that he was in the Mykolaiv region, in Voznesensk, at the [TRC]. That he had been detained, he was moving with the motorcade'.His brother Yevhen Pyshchikov said Dmytro was given permission to defer from military service this year, on account of his bad back: 'He had all the documents and a volunteer certificate with him. He is suitable for service in the [TRC] and rear support units.'Ukrainian ground forces confirmed the incident, writing in a statement: 'The citizen, as a driver, was part of the group that accompanied the foreign actress Angelina Jolie. 'At the time of clarifying all circumstances, this group was nearby.'When all circumstances were clarified, the famous actress continued on her planned route.'Neither she nor her representatives influenced the work of military personnel and civil servants of the TRC and the Recruitment Centre, as some posts on the Internet try to suggest.'The regional military recruitment offiсe in Mykolaiv confirmed Jolie's driver was a military reservist and was ordered to come to military retraining. It was not immediately clear if the driver had been allowed to continue working with her.The Daily Mail has contacted Jolie's representatives for comment. Jolie was in Ukraine as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador on her second visit of the war. She was earlier seen visiting children living in the frontline region which is subjected to daily strikes by Putin's forces.Ukraine is seeking to crackdown on citizens who try and evade the military call-up.Last week, it was revealed that almost 100,000 fighting-age men have fled Ukraine in the last two months after President Volodymyr Zelensky relaxed the rules to allow young men to leave the country. Poland's border guard said 99,000 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22 have crossed the border since August. The new rules mean men between the ages of 18 and 22 are no longer barred from leaving Ukraine. Previously, men between 18 and 60 had been obliged to stay by law since the onset of the war.The martial law was introduced to ensure the army had enough manpower to defend the country against Russia's onslaught. The draft age is currently 25 to 60 years old, having been reduced from 27 in April 2024.Kyiv guards its official death toll, but estimates made by US officials range from 60,000 to 100,000 troops killed since 2022.

Oscar-winning actress and former UN Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie was spotted this week in the embattled city of Kherson, Ukraine, reportedly on a humanitarian mission. Kherson has been a frontline target of Russian forces since 2022, and locals say Jolie visited several hospitals, including a maternity ward and a children’s hospital, bringing attention to civilians caught in the crossfire. Former city council member Vitaliy Bohdanov shared photos of Jolie in a body armor vest bearing the Legacy of War Foundation patch, a charity assisting those affected by the conflict. Another local outlet posted images of Jolie playing with children in a toy-strewn playroom, all while donning the protective gear. Daily Mail has not received a response to its request for comment from reps for Jolie. Russian forces continue near-daily strikes on Kherson, including an October 29 attack on a children's hospital that injured nine, highlighting the perilous conditions Jolie faced during her visit. Jolie served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador from 2001 to 2012 and as Special Envoy until 2022, carrying out more than 60 field missions to aid refugees and displaced families. She stepped down from the role to focus on broader humanitarian and human rights issues, but has returned to Ukraine multiple times. In 2022, she visited Lviv, meeting children injured in the Kramatorsk train station missile strike. She spoke with displaced families at the city’s railway station, taking shelter under air raid sirens. The Malificent star also paid a visit to Ukrainian Child refugees in Rome that same year. That same year, she visited Ukrainian child refugees in Rome at Bambino Gesu pediatric hospital just outside Vatican City. Here she met Ukranian children who had arrived in Italy after fleeing the war in their home country. These children were among the more than two million estimated by UNICEF who have fled Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, with another 2.5 million displaced internally. In February 2022, Jolie spoke about the war in Ukraine in a post to her Instagram followers. She wrote: 'Like many of you, I'm praying for the people in Ukraine.'My focus along with my @refugees colleagues is that everything possible is done to ensure the protection and basic human rights of those displaced, and refugees in the region.'We have already seen reports of casualties and people starting to flee their homes to seek safety.'It is too soon to know what will happen, but the significance of this moment - for the people of Ukraine, and for the international rule of law - cannot be overstated.'
Jolie's decades-long humanitarian work earned her a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2013.The visit to Ukraine comes after Jolie's next career move was revealed as she prepares to be the latest A-lister to flee Hollywood. The actress is reuniting with the Mr. and Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman for another spy thriller. She is starring in the upcoming film titled The Initiative with Liman directing and F. Scott Frazier writing the script, per The Hollywood Reporter. She last worked with the director on the set of the 2005 action-comedy, where she met her ex-husband Brad Pitt. Jolie will portray a rogue master spy named Bright in the movie, which has been described as 'Training Day set in the world spycraft.'Meanwhile, she is reportedly looking to sell her historic Los Angeles home and move abroad as the latest A-lister to pack up to leave Hollywood behind, according to People. The mom-of-six wants to 'put the house up for sale' and move when her youngest kids, twins Knox and Vivienne, turn 18 next year. She shares the twins as well as Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, and Shiloh, 19, with ex-husband Brad, 61. The star 'never wanted to live in L.A. full time' but she 'didn't have a choice because of the custody arrangement with Brad,' a source told the publication. The exes reached a settlement in their ugly divorce in December 2024 after an eight-year legal battle.'She'll be very happy when she's able to leave Los Angeles,' the insider added.

Angelina Jolie has written a foreword for a children's book, These Rights Are Your Rights. On Tuesday, Amnesty International announced it is launching a new book with Andersen Press on children's rights for primary school students. The book is released as children return to school and ahead of the Government's review of the national curriculum, which starts this month. In her preface, Jolie spoke directly to children.Meanwhile, she is still battling ex-husband Brad Pitt for custody of their two youngest children, Vivienne and Knox. The stars have been fighting over their six kids - which also include adults Maddox, Pax, Shiloh and Zahara - for eight years. Jolie's words in her preface were inspiring.'Children everywhere, from the moment you are born, you have the same rights as every other child,' wrote the Oscar-winning actress. 'Laws get broken all the time, but it is harder for this to happen if we know what they are and what can be done to stop it.'That is what this book is about… This book tells you what your rights are, where they come from and why they matter... When young people join together, you are an unstoppable force.'These Rights Are Your Rights is written for children and is informed by children.'In light-touch words and pictures, with fun facts and jokes, it explains what child rights are, how they came into being, how governments are failing to uphold them and equips young people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and others,' the press release reads.'It shows how child rights apply online too, with advice on how to stay safe from cyberbullying, grooming and dark algorithm.'It is illustrated by inspiring stories of children who took action when their rights were being denied. One story is from Sweden's Greta Thunberg, who mobilized school children around the world to demand politicians take meaningful action on climate change. The book has guidance on how to recognize fake news, build skills in how to raise awareness and 'strengthen their confidence.'Alice Sims, Amnesty International UK's Human Rights Education Manager, said: 'This book is ideal for Key Stage 2 - its child-friendly style speaks to children directly and is also useful for teachers and parents to understand and discuss their rights with them.'These Rights Are Your Rights written by Nicky Parker at Amnesty International and illustrated by Sue Cheung, is published by Andersen Press and is available September 5.Meanwhile, Jolie looks to have a hit on her hands with the film Maria.
This comes off an enormous victory for the actress: she received two standing ovations for her new movie Maria Callas at film festivals: one in Venice, the other in Telluride. Jolie was grateful for the support of director Pablo Larrain as she learned opera for Maria. The 49-year-old star plays soprano Maria Callas in the new biopic and was thankful that the Spencer filmmaker understood how much effort was needed for the part.Speaking to Variety about the difficulties of performing opera, Angelina said: 'It wasn't easy. I was fortunate to have a director who truly understood and respected opera. He knew how much work was required and assembled a team around me to teach me.'He made sure I had the classes I needed and gave me the space to practice. From the beginning, he understood that I needed extra time to prepare, and he always supported my transformation process.'Angelia explained that it was 'daunting' to take on the role of Callas but was delighted to be working with the Chilean filmmaker who she has long admired. The 'Eternals' star said: 'You always hope to work with directors you've admired, and I've wanted to work with Pablo for a while. It is a gift to take on something like this, knowing you're in good hands and can push yourself to the edge because they'll catch you.'Her music was daunting, but it's good to feel scared. As an artist, being so challenged that you're unsure if you can do it is a great feeling.'The biopic received an eight-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week and Jolie explained that she spent the time reflecting on the legacy of the opera diva – who passed away aged just 53 after spending her final years living in isolation after her partner Aristotle Onassis left her for Jackie Kennedy.

Angelina Jolie's store Atelier Jolie opened last year. And this month the actress' New York City shop has been buzzing with classes on how to be creative with clothing. On Thursday there will be a session on 'upcycling,' which means reusing old items. On August 28 a class is offered called Experimental Drawing with Andrew Castrucci. Before that there was a class on intimates 'where you can learn how to create designer-inspired intimate apparel.' And there was another gathering with Giancarlo Cipri on how to silkscreen and Mimi Plange on using appliqué through felting. Jolie has also hosted a conversation with artist Ferrari Sheppard. The mostly brown and beige 6,600 sq ft space has an inviting café and an art gallery. It's located on 57 Great Jones Street as if open Tuesdays to Saturdays. 'The place is bustling and has a very smart vibe, I like it in there, it's amazing,' said a fan of Atelier Jolie. 'It's a cool place to hang out.' 'It definitely was a labor of love for Jolie to highlight artists. And the coffee is good, the café is fun,' the source added. 'Everyone there seems genuinely interested in not doing what The Gap sells - there is a lot of hand crafting. The classes are cool. And people do talk about how incredible Angelina is for opening the shop. They adore her. A lot of Jolie fans there. 'Angelina does come into the Atelier, and so do some of her kids.' Inside the store hangs clothing from sustainable brands from all over the world, Atelier Jolie’s own collection, art, and a café run by refugees called Eat Offbeat. It is in New York’s NoHo neighborhood that was formerly the studio and home of Jean-Michel Basquiat, per WSJ. Last year Jolie told WSJ that she will 'probably lose money, maybe even for a while' on her store. 'If I can eventually put into practice some things that I think are improvements and I just break even, that’s a huge victory,' said the Salt star.
Earlier this year they put a call out to creators. 'To all creators-Everyone can join one way or another. 'Every customer will be part... And anyone who visits or participates online, or at the many events will be a part… But today we are focusing on one part of our Atelier family.' The Tomb Raider star added she was looking for 'skilled tailors.' 'The first atelier is going to be in NYC, this post is for skilled tailors living there. We hope there will be others soon, as we build a global family. 'We are looking for tailors who understand quality and creativity. Atelier Jolie will curate a few up-and-coming skilled tailors who have a strong point of view on design. 'This collective’s purpose is to collaborate with customers, supporting them with tools to design and create. You will also have a chance to develop your own line and sell in the shop under your name, to help launch your own new sustainable brand after leaving the residency. 'We understand because of financial reasons that you may not have been able to touch on sustainability, so we are here to support that endeavor. 'Soon, we will be looking for artisans—with a focus on embroidery, fabric painting, fabric manipulations, etc... There will be different calls for talent submissions. Some in-house… Some for special events and salon dinners... Some are to be featured in tutorials online. All to help share your creativity. 'As you fill out the submission form below, I encourage everyone as artists to always protect your creations. You should never submit confidential designs… share what you have shared with the world already. We will see the work with respect and integrity. 'We look forward to reviewing them. Remember, if you don’t hear from us this round, there will be many more rounds and other opportunities to come. 'Thank you in advance for sharing your creativity. Be bold. 'Love, Angelina Jolie, Founder.'

Angelina Jolie looked effortlessly chic as she visited the storefront for her new fashion brand, Atelier Jolie. The actress, 48, was seen departing the shop in New York City with her children Zahara, 18, and Knox Jolie-Pitt, 15, on Tuesday. She looked incredibly sophisticated in a black blazer worn over a matching top and smart trousers that skimmed over her heeled leather footwear. The A-lister emerged from the shop with a sleek pair of sunglasses shielding her eyes and her honey brunette hair cascading down her head. She commanded attention as she left the store with a smile on her face and hardly a stitch of makeup on her radiant complexion.Angelina - who shares Zahara and Knox with ex-husband Brad Pitt - followed her daughter down the stairs before flashing a wide grin. The Tomb Raider star launched Atelier Jolie earlier this year and in July announced her store would be opening at 57 Great Jones St. in New York City, a building closely connected to two late art legends. The graffitied building was once owned by Andy Warhol and occupied by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Warhol purchased the building in 1970 and later rented the second floor to Basquiat, his friend and protégé. 'A privilege to be in this space. We will do our best to respect and honor its artist legacy with community and creativity. Hope to see you there,' Angelina posted to Instagram back in July. 'Jean-Michel Basquiat’s sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveauxex illuminate his contribution to the history of art at the exhibit King Pleasure,' she added. Accompanying the message was a video of her store's name being spray painted onto the building as Angelina stood close by. Speaking to Vogue of her fashion brand, she said back in September: 'I don’t want to be a big fashion designer, I want to build a house for other people to become that. 'I'm hoping to change many aspects of my life. And this is the forward-facing one.'
Angelina told the outlet that she hopes Atelier Jolie will inspire women to 'feel safe enough' to be 'soft,' something she herself has had a hard time doing. 'After I went through something where I was hurt, I had a therapist ask if I would try wearing a flowing garment. 'Sounds silly, but I assumed that pants and boots projected a "tougher" look, a stronger me. 'Was I strong enough to be soft? At the time, no. I felt vulnerable. Now I wonder if... I don’t know what my style is because I’m still understanding who I am at 48.'
