The Crown‘s Anna Chancellor and The Wire‘s Clarke Peters have joined the cast of Come Away, the fantasy drama starring Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo that is serving as the live-action debut of Brave director Brenda Chapman. The pic has just started filming in the UK for seven weeks, followed by three weeks in Los Angeles. As Deadline scooped in May, the pic, from UK-based Fred Films and Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon Productions, is imagined as a prequel to Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan and was scripted by Marissa Kate Goodhill. The plot: Before Alice went to Wonderland, and before Peter became Pan, they were brother and sister who live an idyllic childhood with parents Jack and Rose (Oyelowo and Jolie) and older brother David. Fate turns their games of tea parties, pirates and lost boys upside down, setting the stage for their iconic journeys into Wonderland and Neverland. Keira Chansa and Jordan Nash, both newcomers, have been set to play Alice and Peter, respectively. Reece Yates will play David. Leesa Kahn, James Spring, Oyelowo, Jolie and Andrea Keir are producing. For Jolie, this comes after she began production on Maleficent 2 in May. Oyelowo recently wrapped shooting on BBC One’s six-part event adaptation of Les Misérables.

Angelina Jolie In Talks To Star In “Wicked” Movie?

Is Angelina Jolie in talks to star in the movie version of Wicked? A report claims the Oscar winner may play the lead role of Elphaba, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West. But Gossip Cop has learned that this story, which comes from a discredited site, is untrue.“Angelina Jolie Taking Wicked Singing Lessons,” reads the headline from Naughty Gossip, which contends, “Angelina Jolie has been taking signing lessons in London because she is in talks to star in the film version of the Broadway hit ‘Wicked.’” So-called “sources” are quoted as collectively saying, “Angie has seen the musical on stage three times with her kids and knows the entire score.” Alleges these untraceable tipsters, “The green witch fascinates her. Playing someone that is misunderstood and assumed to be wicked is something she relates to.”The unidentifiable “sources” go on to jointly assert, “She knows she can act the part but the singing scares her which is why she is testing herself with a singing teacher.” It’s further claimed that “after seeing Meryl Streep in the Mamma Mia film, Angie wants to try doing a musical herself.” The blog concludes by editorializing, “Fingers crossed. And let’s see if Jennifer Aniston is interested in playing Glinda!”There are a number of problems here. To begin with, it hardly makes sense to claim Jolie has been inspired to star in a movie musical after watching Streep in Mamma Mia, because while the sequel just came out last week, the first Mamma Mia film opened in theaters a full 10 years ago. In the years since then, Jolie has never made any known attempt to secure a singing role.It appears as if this unsubstantiated tale was concocted for two reasons: One, it’s piggybacking off the release of Mamma Mia: Here We Ago Again, and two, it follows Jolie taking her kids to see Wicked in London earlier this month. None of that gives credence to this story. In fact, there’s far more suggesting these claims about the actress starring in the big screen adaptation of Wicked are all made-up.
The last official news came out two years ago, when Universal announced a 2019 release date for Wicked. Since then, however, the project has remained in development. At this point, it is practically impossible for the movie to hit theaters next year. Not one of the trade outlets that cover the film industry has reported anything about stars currently being in negotiations, least of all Jolie. And she would likely raise eyebrows as a contender for the main character, since Elphaba is supposed to be a college-aged student attending Shiz University. When Idina Menzel originated the role on Broadway, she was in her early 30s. Jolie is a decade older than that. The questionable article doesn’t acknowledge any of this. Furthermore, Gossip Cop also reached out to Stephen Daldry, the director of the film adaptation, and we’re told through his spokesperson that it is “not true” Jolie is in talks for the role.Gossip Cop would be remiss if we didn’t also point out that these suspect claims are coming from the same website that falsely announced Jolie and Brad Pitt were “back together” last fall. On top of clearly knowing very little about her life, this online publication has also demonstrated it isn’t credible about the film world, either, including when it comes to movie musicals. Just last month, we busted the blog for a provably untrue piece that claimed Barbra Streisand was trying to overshadow Lady Gaga’s starring turn in the remake of A Star Is Born. Much like now, that report was also based on unnamed “sources,” but never corroborated by any trustworthy outlets. Conclusion: This article maintains Jolie is talks to star in the movie version of Wicked. But there is sketchy sourcing, a documented history of this site spreading misinformation about Jolie as well as other films, and the omission of key facts about the project. And even the director’s own rep, who is authorized to speak on his behalf, tells Gossip Cop it isn’t true Jolie is in talks for the part. We have also reached out to reps for Jolie and Universal for comment, but based on what is known, we’re rating this rumor a zero.
