What Angelina Jolie Liked Best About Working With Her ‘The Tourist’ Co-Star Johnny Depp

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp both boast their fair share of cinematic accomplishments. Jolie is well known for her spellbinding turn in Maleficent, as well as action sagas like Wanted and Salt. She has also starred in a couple of heartwrenching dramas, including Changeling and By the Sea. As for Depp, he is quite the character actor — and Tim Burton’s secret weapon. He is well known for taking on Edward Scissorhands, The Mad Hatter, Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. When the two teamed up for The Tourist, fans jumped for joy. Unfortunately,  the final result did not live up to the hype, as the film premiered to subpar critical and audience reception, and poor box office results. However, despite the fact that the film flopped, the two reportedly enjoy working together, celebrating each other’s skills and character. During an interview with PopSugar, Angelina Jolie was asked to comment on “the best part of working with Johnny Depp,” and she highlighted the type of man he is. Jolie shared:
“He’s just such a nice guy. He’s so funny and so fun to hang out with. He’s just that friend you’re so happy to come to work and do scenes with. Plus, he’s such a brilliant actor. He’s often thought of so much for his deep character work, but it really comes from an artist who is willing to try things. He’s not just somebody who’s doing these fun [movies]; he’s a real experimental deeply-feeling artist, who gives a lot and is very gracious on set to everybody and to his fellow actors. He’s just a pleasure.
The admiration Jolie felt for Depp, Depp also seemed to feel for Jolie. Depp noted that the two clicked right from the get-go.Depp has a lot of respect for Jolie.Depp told PopSugar that he would hope to work with Jolie again in the future. He commented on how great a person she is, explaining that she remains “grounded” in the face of overwhelming scrutiny. He said:
“…She’s a good girl. I have a lot of respect for her. In the face of all that she, Brad, and the kids have to deal with, being globally under the microscope every second of the day, she’s grounded. She’s as cool, normal, and low key [a woman] as you’d want to meet. She doesn’t take it all that seriously. She is a wonderful mommy, a great mommy, which you’ve gotta take your hat off to as well. And she’s out there trying to do things in the world, to help. She’s impressive. She’s a force.”
Though The Tourist may have been a flop, Jolie and Depp likely don’t regret starring in the movie, as they both got to work across from an actor they admire and respect.

Angelina Jolie on the VFX and ‘Extraordinary Detail and Care’ Behind Disney’s ‘The One and Only Ivan’

“My child, Shiloh brought the book to me, she had read it and she loved it, Angelina Jolie says recalling the first time she had seen “The One and Only Ivan,” written by Katherine Applegate.Exploring why her child was affected by the book, why she loved Ivan, a silverback gorilla, and why he spoke to her led to Jolie stepping in, not just as a voice actress, but as a producer on Disney’s adaptation of the novel. Not only was Ivan based on a real gorilla, Jolie thought it was a great way for her child to learn about “what activism can do and what sanctuaries are.” But more importantly, “There’s family and self-discovery,” she says of the story.“The One and Only Ivan” centers around a gorilla who lives in a cage at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. Having spent his life in captivity with other animals, he starts piecing together his past with the help of Stella, an elephant voiced by Jolie, and together they devise a plan to escape from captivity. The bigger question was how was director Thea Sharrock going to bring Stella and the animals to life when the film’s principal cast consisted of animals. That’s where the VFX team at MPC stepped in to bring Stella, Ivan and the other animals to life.“Any time you see a shot that has no humans in it, that’s CGI; it’s not just the animals. They also created the environment,” Sharrock notes of the meticulous detail that combines CGI, virtual production, live-action and VFX.Nick Davis, VFX supervisor, says “The biggest challenge for us was creating the photorealistic animals. That was the biggest challenge; finding that place where we built the animals so the animation team could add in that anthropomorphic movement and balancing that with a performance where they were emoting.”The film gave the team a chance to push the technology and build on innovation from “The Lion King.”Jolie, Sam Rockwell (Ivan), Bryan Cranston and the cast all delivered initial voice recordings which helped MPC shoot intuitively to get the best scenes possible. For the motion capture, Sharrock explains there were two people in green from head to toe, and a soft board skeleton, so if anyone needed to have contact, there was something to look at, “It was like working with puppeteers — it was there to help all of us.”
Jolie says, “We would do our voices, we would play with the scene and we would see what was created in CG and the VFX. We would redo the performance because the slowness of the breath or how long it takes to drag her feet when she’s tired. Everyone would take painstaking efforts [to recreate and readjust that moment] because it mattered in this film.” She continues, “I remember the first time I saw some of the animals, I thought, ‘There’s a soul to it.’“You don’t realize how much work is put into it,” Jolie says –MPC delivered 1055 shots for the film which took eight weeks to shoot for the virtual production and 12 weeks for the live-action. “Sometimes it’s obvious that this is a CG thing or some action. You don’t watch the movie thinking ‘Is this fake or is it real?’ You are engrossed in the emotion of the characters.” Sharrock adds the refining process was a collaborative process not just with the VFX team but with the cast, “The voice was where the soul began.” To get that right, she would have Jolie and the cast come in, “Sometimes I’d call Angie and say ‘We’ve done this scene 24 times, and you’ve given me 15 different examples, but something the animators had done would spark a new idea. She would get it and give me something new.’ Jolie jokes that she even had an elephant onesie that she wore for a few voice sessions, “That was my method moment.” But it wasn’t about watching nature documentaries or elephants. “You’re doing a being. What is this being? She has the weight and heaviness of being an older elephant. It was thinking about the being that had been captive and had been harmed, and an elephant who was worried about the next generation – what is the soul of an elephant, that’s what it was.Jolie says her children were surprised by the finished product. “They were a bit shocked because it’s something that they hadn’t seen before it became real.” With the film coming out during a pandemic, she hopes the film will be released on a big screen when it’s safe because of the “extraordinary detail and care” the VFX team went through to bring Ivan to life. She notes the film’s theme of feeling trapped resonates with children at this time. “There’s something about the captivity of it too that I think was sadly speaking to children and helping each other through with feeling confined. I think it spoke to kids and touched at a good time.”

Angelina Jolie Joined Eternals Because Marvel Wants To Change How We See Superheroes

Angelina Jolie says she wanted to join Chloé Zhao's Eternals as Thena because Marvel Studios wants to change how superheroes are perceived.Marvel Studios wants to change how superheroes are seen in Eternals, and that's why Angelina Jolie decided to join the project. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 film will introduce a new superhero team to the franchise. It will potentially shake up its power structure, and perhaps even its known history, since the Eternals are supposedly in existence for centuries already. Eternals boasts a talented ensemble cast including Jolie who's playing Thena. Not much is known about specific plot details for the movie at this point. Marvel Studios has yet to release any additional information beyond what was revealed in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con and D23 Expo, where the company officially talked about the film. Created by the Celestials, the Eternals are powerful beings who are essentially immortals, which is why their stories span many years. The main narrative, however, will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Joining Jolie are Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Gemma Chan as Sersi, and Kit Harington as Black Knight, along with several others.Opening up to British Vogue about her decision to join the MCU through Eternals, Jolie reveals Marvel Studios and Zhao want to change how audiences view superheroes. While she didn't get into more detail about what this means, the actress sounds like she had a blast working on the movie despite this unexpected career turn.
I love this cast, and that we all came together. I signed up to support Chloé [Zhao]’s vision and Marvel’s commitment to expand the way we see "superheroes." Running around in a gold bodysuit was not how I imagined my forties. But it’s good crazy, I think.
Jolie joining the MCU has long been one of the most surprising parts of Eternals. These latest comments, however, lend some clarity to her decision. It seems Jolie found a common goal with Marvel Studios and Zhao in signing on for Eternals. It's hard to know for sure what the actress means by Marvel wanting to change how audiences see superheroes. However, she's most likely referencing the company's ongoing push for diversity and inclusion, which is an especially important aspect of Eternals. After a few scheduling changes brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, Eternals is now slated to release in November 2021. Still, Marvel Studios has yet to begin properly promoting the film, so there hasn't been an official close-up look at Jolie as Thena or any other characters from the movie. This is understandable considering how things easily change now due to the uncertain times. It's still possible the MCU's whole Phase 4 will shift again as Black Widow is once again threatened to be delayed. Nevertheless, based on what's been said about Eternals thus far, it sounds like it's going to be worth the wait.

The film is one of well over a dozen titles from Warner Brothers that will be released in both theaters as well as on HBO Max this year, in the studio’s plan to minimize financial fallout due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and prolonged theatrical closures that it has caused. The first title to drop in this simultaneous format was Wonder Woman 1984, which bowed on Christmas Day.That film enjoyed massive exposure and generated record subscriptions as well as views for the platform, as many viewers were still at home due to lockdown and social distancing. And while Warner Bros. is pushing forward with the plan, certain filmmakers are none too happy about it, including Denis Villeneuve.Villeneuve directed the sci-fi epic Dune, starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, which is due out on October 1st. In addition to Those Who Wish Me Dead, Jolie is currently wrapping up another buzzy title – Marvel’s epic superhero film Eternals, which is expected in November.
The movie will costar Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tyree Henry.Part of MCU's Phase 4, Eternals will tell the mythic tale of a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history.Angelina's upcoming screen time is admirable amid the pandemic being that she has been busy raising her six 'resilient' children. In a recent interview with Vogue, while also gracing the magazine's cover, Jolie admitted she doesn't view herself as 'a traditional stay-at-home mum' as she was 'was never very good at sitting still', but credited her six kids for 'helping' her motherhood journey.Angelina co-parents Maddox, 19, Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, Shiloh, 14, and 12-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox with ex and fellow A-list star Brad Pitt.Discussing juggling her parental duties with work, the Changeling actress stated that she 'was never very good at sitting still.' Even though I wanted to have many children and be a mom, I always imagined it kind of like Jane Goodall, travelling in the middle of the jungle somewhere. I didn't imagine it in that true, traditional sense. 'I feel like I'm lacking in all the skills to be a traditional stay-at-home mom,' she humbly admitted.'I'm managing through it because the children are quite resilient, and they're helping me, but I'm not good at it at all.' Jolie has been single ever since she separated from Pitt in September 2016, following two years of marriage and a well documented 12-year relationship.
