Angelina Jolie Joined Eternals Because Marvel Wants To Change How We See Superheroes

Angelina Jolie says she wanted to join Chloé Zhao's Eternals as Thena because Marvel Studios wants to change how superheroes are perceived.Marvel Studios wants to change how superheroes are seen in Eternals, and that's why Angelina Jolie decided to join the project. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 film will introduce a new superhero team to the franchise. It will potentially shake up its power structure, and perhaps even its known history, since the Eternals are supposedly in existence for centuries already. Eternals boasts a talented ensemble cast including Jolie who's playing Thena. Not much is known about specific plot details for the movie at this point. Marvel Studios has yet to release any additional information beyond what was revealed in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con and D23 Expo, where the company officially talked about the film. Created by the Celestials, the Eternals are powerful beings who are essentially immortals, which is why their stories span many years. The main narrative, however, will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Joining Jolie are Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Gemma Chan as Sersi, and Kit Harington as Black Knight, along with several others.Opening up to British Vogue about her decision to join the MCU through Eternals, Jolie reveals Marvel Studios and Zhao want to change how audiences view superheroes. While she didn't get into more detail about what this means, the actress sounds like she had a blast working on the movie despite this unexpected career turn.
I love this cast, and that we all came together. I signed up to support Chloé [Zhao]’s vision and Marvel’s commitment to expand the way we see "superheroes." Running around in a gold bodysuit was not how I imagined my forties. But it’s good crazy, I think.
Jolie joining the MCU has long been one of the most surprising parts of Eternals. These latest comments, however, lend some clarity to her decision. It seems Jolie found a common goal with Marvel Studios and Zhao in signing on for Eternals. It's hard to know for sure what the actress means by Marvel wanting to change how audiences see superheroes. However, she's most likely referencing the company's ongoing push for diversity and inclusion, which is an especially important aspect of Eternals. After a few scheduling changes brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, Eternals is now slated to release in November 2021. Still, Marvel Studios has yet to begin properly promoting the film, so there hasn't been an official close-up look at Jolie as Thena or any other characters from the movie. This is understandable considering how things easily change now due to the uncertain times. It's still possible the MCU's whole Phase 4 will shift again as Black Widow is once again threatened to be delayed. Nevertheless, based on what's been said about Eternals thus far, it sounds like it's going to be worth the wait.

The film is one of well over a dozen titles from Warner Brothers that will be released in both theaters as well as on HBO Max this year, in the studio’s plan to minimize financial fallout due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and prolonged theatrical closures that it has caused. The first title to drop in this simultaneous format was Wonder Woman 1984, which bowed on Christmas Day.That film enjoyed massive exposure and generated record subscriptions as well as views for the platform, as many viewers were still at home due to lockdown and social distancing. And while Warner Bros. is pushing forward with the plan, certain filmmakers are none too happy about it, including Denis Villeneuve.Villeneuve directed the sci-fi epic Dune, starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, which is due out on October 1st. In addition to Those Who Wish Me Dead, Jolie is currently wrapping up another buzzy title – Marvel’s epic superhero film Eternals, which is expected in November.
The movie will costar Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tyree Henry.Part of MCU's Phase 4, Eternals will tell the mythic tale of a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history.Angelina's upcoming screen time is admirable amid the pandemic being that she has been busy raising her six 'resilient' children. In a recent interview with Vogue, while also gracing the magazine's cover, Jolie admitted she doesn't view herself as 'a traditional stay-at-home mum' as she was 'was never very good at sitting still', but credited her six kids for 'helping' her motherhood journey.Angelina co-parents Maddox, 19, Pax, 17, Zahara, 16, Shiloh, 14, and 12-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox with ex and fellow A-list star Brad Pitt.Discussing juggling her parental duties with work, the Changeling actress stated that she 'was never very good at sitting still.' Even though I wanted to have many children and be a mom, I always imagined it kind of like Jane Goodall, travelling in the middle of the jungle somewhere. I didn't imagine it in that true, traditional sense. 'I feel like I'm lacking in all the skills to be a traditional stay-at-home mom,' she humbly admitted.'I'm managing through it because the children are quite resilient, and they're helping me, but I'm not good at it at all.' Jolie has been single ever since she separated from Pitt in September 2016, following two years of marriage and a well documented 12-year relationship.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2 Almost Happened. Here's Why The Sequel Got Turned Down

If you're a fan of this classic romantic comedy that boasts two seriously A-list stars, you've probably wondered why a sequel was never made... and now, you have your answer.Famous — or perhaps infamous — for its dramatic real-life romance between its two stars, director Doug Liman's film Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as Jane and John, two highly trained assassins masquerading as a normal, suburban couple. Both bored with their humdrum lives, the Smiths are thrust into an unexpected adventure when they discover that not only are they both spies, but since they work for different agencies, they've actually been ordered to kill one another. Despite the fact that Pitt was married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston while he filmed the movie, he and Jolie famously struck up an on-set romance during the filming of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, with Pitt ultimately divorcing Aniston and publicly committing to Jolie to create the media sensation that earned the nickname "Brangelina." Though many people probably associate Mr. & Mrs. Smith with the real-life scandal that followed, the witty action comedy also stands in its own right, and fans have probably been curious about a sequel for years. However, according to Jolie herself in an interview conducted over a decade ago, Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2 just wasn't in the cards — and at this rate, the concept seems potentially impossible. Here's why Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2 didn't get made after the film's 2005 release, and why it probably wouldn't get made today. In a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair, Jolie opened up about her then-relationship with Pitt — the two divorced in 2016 — as well as their six adopted and biological children. When asked about the potential of a second Mr. & Mrs. Smith movie, Jolie demurred, saying the project was pretty unlikely."People have tried [to make it]," Jolie told Vanity Fair. "And it's strange: do we have kids in the movie? We've thought about that, but it becomes personal now that we actually have kids. And if we work on it, we pull from our own life, which is funny to us, but you feel strange sharing too much. We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel, but there wasn't anything original. It was just, Well, they're going to get married, or they've got kids, or they get separated. Never great."
At the time, however, Jolie did say she would love to work with Pitt again, but probably on a different project. "We've talked about it," the actress continued. "We'd have to figure out who's going to watch the kids, but it's really about finding the right thing, because we've looked. When you're a couple, there are certain things people don't want to see you do. It becomes too indulgent, too personal. I don't think people want to see people who are really together intimate on-screen. Maybe we have to play bad guys that try to kill each other, so it's just fun and aggressive, not dealing with some man-woman deal." Ultimately, the duo did appear on screen together again in the 2015 drama By the Sea, which Jolie directed and shot during the couple's honeymoon.Despite the fact that Mr. & Mrs. Smith was an undisputed box office success, earning $487 million worldwide, a sequel would be impossible today.Putting aside Jolie and Pitt's divorce — which obviously complicates whether or not the two would even portray a couple on screen again — Jolie, Pitt, and director Doug Liman have all been quite busy in the years since Mr. & Mrs. Smith's release. After earning Academy Award nominations for films like Moneyball and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Pitt earned his first ever acting Oscar in 2019 for the Quentin Tarantino epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood..., marking his second collaboration with the director after 2009's Inglourious Basterds. Alongside his acting successes, Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment, has produced Oscar winners like The Departed, 12 Years a Slave, and Moonlight. As for Jolie, aside from appearing in films like the Maleficent franchise, the actress has directed four other films besides By the Sea, including 2011's In the Land of Blood and Honey and 2014's Unbroken. She has also emerged as a leading humanitarian, working as a Special Envoy for the United Nations to help refugees and promote equal education opportunities, women's rights, and conservation across the world.Meanwhile, Liman's newest film, Locked Down — which was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic — has just hit HBO Max, and the director will reunite with his Edge of Tomorrow star Tom Cruise for a mysterious project that may be shot in space (with the help of Elon Musk). Between these three, Mr. & Mrs. Smith doesn't seem to be in the cards, based on schedules and Jolie and Pitt's split. If you want to revisit the original, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is available to rent on major streaming platforms.
