Angelina Jolie feels like all of Hollywood hates her after her latest film underperformed at the box office? That’s the silly claim from one of the tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the story and found it untrue.NW published the story under the headline, “Ange: ‘Hollywood Hates Me.’” The tabloid argues that after she “came out second best” in her divorce from Brad Pitt, the actress is now worried that her “campaign to bury” him has backfired and damaged her reputation. Citing a totally anonymous “insider,” the outlet says that the actress is “reeling” after Maleficent: Mistress of Evil had what’s called a “paltry” opening of $36.9 million, leaving Jolie wondering if moviegoing audiences have turned on her for “taking Brad down after their split.”“The film has been a spectacular flop,” the alleged source says. “She’s left wondering if Hollywood still considers her bankable — especially since Brad had such an incredible showing with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It’s left Angie a basket case!” Why would Jolie suddenly fear being disliked when she’s on the record as saying that she doesn’t care what anyone says about her? “I never expect to be the one that everybody understands or likes,” Jolie told the New York Times in 2017, “and that’s O.K., because I know who I am, and the kids know who I am.” That being said, that isn’t the only question that goes unanswered in this piece. How exactly did Jolie come out worse in the divorce? What exactly goes into a “campaign” to bury an ex? And perhaps most bafflingly, how in the world is the Maleficent sequel a “spectacular flop” after grossing more than $430 million worldwide in less than a month and taking the number one spot at the box office for two weekends in a row? The tabloid conveniently leaves out the answers to these questions for the simple fact that it doesn’t have them. The outlet’s “source” merely throws out baseless accusations without any hint of credibility.
This is just one of several pieces that uses a made-up “campaign” or “competition” involving Jolie and Pitt to try and attract readers’ attention.Just last month, Gossip Cop called out the National Enquirer for an extremely similar and just as fictional story about Jolie being jealous of Pitt’s success and finding herself “alone” in Hollywood after she “poured so much dark energy into this dirty divorce.” Claiming that Jolie is the “bad guy” in the divorce is clearly just an easy narrative for the tabloids, despite the fact it’s not accurate.Furthermore, it’s ridiculous to accuse Jolie of being box office poison. Although the Maleficent sequel didn’t quite hit its expected numbers, many critics praised Jolie’s performance. No legitimate outlet would even consider blaming the actress for the film’s flaws or box office performance, especially for a sequel made five years after the original installment. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil won’t go down as a major hit, but it’s far from a “spectacular flop.” The magazine also leaves out the fact that Jolie has a number of projects in the works, with four currently in production and more on deck. One of these projects is Marvel’s Eternals, part of the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — also known as one of the most profitable and bankable franchises in existence. Jolie has been the face of the film for most of its pre-release publicity, something that wouldn’t happen if there really was any reason to question her effect on the box office or status in Hollywood. Also left out of this latest piece is any mention of the tabloid’s previous claims about Jolie and Pitt. Just last month, it incorrectly stated that Jolie was on a hunger strike to protest a custody ruling that allowed Pitt to visit his children. This summer, the tabloid “reported” that Jolie and Pitt’s daughter Shiloh had “escaped” her mom to live with her dad. Not only were both of those claims untrue, but they reveal the tabloid’s recurring theme of painting Jolie as a villain. This ongoing saga just isn’t correct.
