‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’: Angelina Jolie Was Dissatisfied With the Movie Because Her Character Wasn’t ‘Sexy Enough’

Angelina Jolie might have been a bit disappointed with her first Tomb Raider film. Adapted from the video game of the same name, Raider tested if Jolie could lead her own action movie. Despite it being a somewhat financial success, Jolie felt there was more that could have been done with the film.Jolie wasn’t completely on board with the film when it was first presented to her. In an interview with Collider, the Marvel star opened up about her hesitation in accepting the role.“I said, ‘I really didn’t feel like that character suited me.’ I actually didn’t at first want to do it; I said no,” Jolie recalled. But she was eventually sold on the film for several reasons.“But they said you can travel the world and train with the British Military and so I had three months of seeing what I could do. And I would encourage anybody to do that,” she continued. “Sign up for as much as you can, give yourself a few months, push yourself to the limit and see, ‘What can I do?’ And you find that there’s a lot you didn’t know and some crazy, weird things you can do or you’re capable of, so I love it.” Angelina Jolie felt her character wasn’t ‘sexy enough’ in ‘Tomb Raider’ Angelina Jolie felt there were many reasons why the first Tomb Raider didn’t meet its full potential. In an interview with Black Film, the Girl, Interrupted actor opened up about what she felt the film missed the mark on.“I wasn’t satisfied with it. Through the making of that film, we were all still trying [to] figure out how things worked, and we were trying to make the video game into a person, but still it was the video game and still she was a video vixen and she wasn’t quite a solid woman with emotions and feelings,” she said.Jolie also factored in the character’s sexual appeal when discussing the film’s downfalls. While making the sequel, Jolie and the crew would try to correct the mistakes made in the first Tomb Raider. “Even the way she looked wasn’t to me sexy and real enough. So there were a lot of things, and we couldn’t adjust to everything right. We thought a lot about how to make the second film right,” she continued.Despite her disappointment in Tomb Raider, the film helped Jolie grow in several ways during filming. It alleviated concerns Jolie had about her own limitations and helped her discover what she was capable of as a performer.“One night, I was sitting in my bathtub with all my bruises and cuts. I was crying and thinking, ‘What am I doing? I can’t pull this off, ” Jolie told Cinema. “But after a few months of pushing yourself, you’re suddenly swinging on a bunji rope and realizing, ‘Wow, I’m not hitting the wall.’”At the same time, Jolie felt shooting Tomb Raider was a good opportunity to reconnect with family. She reached out to her father, actor Jon Voight, and asked him to be a part of the action flick.“I called him and got Jon’s answering machine. I said, ‘It’s Angie and this is not a bad call. No more tattoos and I’m not pregnant. I just want you to be in a movie with me,’” she remembered. For Jolie, Tomb Raider allowed for some father-daughter bonding between the two that she felt was necessary.“My parents divorced when I was little and my Dad was never really absent in my life, but we didn’t spend all the time we could together. My Dad was very supportive, but there were still questions that I wanted to ask him. So this movie was great because it gave us quiet time to spend together,” Jolie added.

Director Chloe Zhao was ‘nervous to work with Angelina Jolie in Eternals'

Director Chloe Zhao had revealed she was nervous to work with Angelina Jolie in the Marvel superhero movie Eternals as she admired the actress, but said Jolie “really understood” what she was trying to do with the film. The Oscar-winning filmmaker, 39, directed the sci-fi saga with Jolie playing the role of Thena, a fierce warrior Eternal who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy. The movie, which was released to UK cinemas in November, focuses upon immortal aliens who have been secretly living on Earth for thousands of years waiting for the right moment to jump into action.Discussing working with Jolie for the project, Zhao told Radio Times: “I was nervous at first, anyone would be. I’d admired her from afar pretty much my whole life.“But because she makes films herself and they often take place in harsh places in the world, she really understood what I was trying to do.“Angie is playing the physically strongest character, but Thena is broken inside and in order to have that vulnerability she shared a lot of who she is and what she’s gone through in life.”The filmmaker also said it was an “honour” to direct a film within the Marvel franchise, but admitted she did feel a lot of pressure taking on such a task. She added: “I did come in as a fan, so you want to make sure you do right by the fans but also move the MCU forward.“We’re in a transitional time after the Infinity Saga and you don’t want to play it safe, you want to look at these films and ask, how can we deconstruct and redefine everything we think about them.”Eternals, which follows the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and is based on a group of superheroes who made their first appearance in Marvel comics in 1976, also features a string of stars including Richard Madden, Gemma Chan and Salma Hayek.Zhao previously made history at the Oscars in 2021 with her movie Nomadland as she became the first woman of colour to win best director. The drama also picked up the coveted best picture award and best actress for star Frances McDormand.Reflecting on working with another acclaimed actress with McDormand, Zhao added: “Like what I was talking about in terms of working with Angie, Fran is so brave.“These actresses defy some of the Hollywood constraint that’s been put on them.“They just let the camera in, they’re not hiding anything, and that’s the strongest thing they can do.”

Angelina Jolie & Harry Styles' Eternals Costumes Were Completely CGI

VFX Supervisor Matt Aitken shares that the costumes for Thena and Eros in Marvel's Eternals were redesigned entirely during post-production.The VFX supervisor for Marvel's Eternals recently shared that two of the Eternals costumes were entirely computer-generated. Marvel's latest family from director Chloé Zhao explores the origins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and expands on the concept of Celestials, massive entities that oversee universal life, which was first introduced in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Marvel's latest lore-heavy epic expands on these beings and shows the power and destruction that the Celestials leave in their wake. The film features a diverse ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Lia McHugh, Laura Ridloff, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie, playing the roles of the Eternals. They are instructed to protect the Earth from the Deviants. However, when the rise of a new Celestial threatens the world's existence, they have come to know and love, the group is forced to decide whether or not to fulfill the mission for which they were created or to save the world they believe they were protecting. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Weta Digital's Matt Aitken, visual effects supervisor for Eternals, shared that while most characters wore their costumes, Thena's (Angelina Jolie) and Eros' (Harry Styles) suits were completely CGI. According to him, this had to do with design changes during post-production. Here is what he had to say about Thena's costume design:    "Thena, when she's in her superhero suit, it's always entirely CG. She's a CG from the neck down, because the suit design changed in post-production. Getting her body performance so that it had that iconic aspect to it, they've cast Angelina Jolie for a reason. And part of that is that she has a way of moving that's almost like a dancer." In regards to Harry Style's Eros' costume,  this is what Aiken had to say: "Obviously we had digi-doubles of them all, but the only other one that changed completely was, you mentioned the post-credits or the mid-credits scene with Starfox, or Eros slash Starfox and Pip the Troll. Eros' costume was another redesign." With a budget of $200 million, Eternals is one of the more expensive Marvel movies. So, it makes sense that a good portion of the budget would be dedicated to visual effects to bring this epic to life, not just for the Eternals themselves, but for the massive space settings, hordes of Deviants, 300-mile-high Celestial threats, and even for some of the characters' costumes. With an enormous budget, it only makes sense that a VFX team will have more freedom for character redesigns. As a film enters its post-production phase, changes are likely to be made. So it would be possible that some of the characters' costumes would need a CGI overhaul to match the action sequences and character movements. While the Eternals is likely to earn a profit, there is still a risk in doing a complete redesign in post-production, sacrificing practical effects for CGI. However, it seems that Eternals was able to pull it off and dazzle audiences with its visual storytelling.
