Scary prospects for Disney’s ‘Maleficent’

Disney’s dark fantasy film, “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie as the title villainess, may be too dark and scary to be profitable, one Wall Street analyst wrote in a report on Monday. The $130-million-budget movie, which tells the “Sleeping Beauty” tale from the perspective of the evil Maleficent, is set to debut May 30 and will likely result in Disney being forced into a write-down, Wells Fargo’s Marci Ryvicker wrote in a report.“[E]xpectations for a ‘Maleficent’ write-off seem relatively widespread,” she wrote. With more than eight weeks to go before “Maleficent” unspools, few on Wall Street are ready to take such a bold stance.“It’s definitely in the ‘not a sure thing’ bucket,” a second analyst said of the re-imagined fairy tale. RBC Capital’s David Bank is penciling in a total US haul of $150 million. The movie appears to be pitched at young adults rather than at the more traditional audience for a Disney princess movie: small children.
Jolie appears in the movie with enhanced sharp high cheekbones and headgear with horns. The actress struck a deal with fashion designer Stella McCartney to create a capsule collection for children aged 4 to 14 based on the movie. It’s hard to deny strong interest in the movie — or perhaps simply Jolie. An official trailer posted March 18 has gained 4 million views on YouTube. A January trailer garnered 13 million views.“Maleficent” has 1.8 million Facebook fans, more than any other non-franchise film with a 2014 release date, according to Jason Klein, co-CEO and founder of Listen First Media.Whether that translates into a big box-office number is anyone’s guess.A write-down, while very much an open question, could slow the momentum of Disney, whose “Frozen” last week became the highest-grossing animated movie of all time.

Angelina Jolie's Maleficent has wings!

Already thought Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent was scary? Wait until you see her powerful, never-before-seen wings, exclusively revealed today by USA TODAY. From the U.K. set of the epic Disney live-action film, Angelina Jolie reveals what it was like to fly with her wings in in the classic tale's reboot — and the workout she begrudgingly agreed to.Hooked up on rigs in full costume (yes, even those horns) on set at Pinewood Studios, "you're almost like a puppet with all these people moving (beneath you)," says Jolie. "When you go to the left or the right all of you have to move together. It's a big dance with a lot of people." How did she pull it off? Well, through a regimen Jolie admits she eschews. Jolie's longtime stunt coordinator Eunice Huthart (a close friend, who is also godmother to Shiloh Jolie-Pitt) slowed down and intensified her workouts. "She made me do yoga. And I have no patience for yoga," says Jolie. "It's not something I do easily, because I'm not a still person. But I was forced to do yoga because (to fly) you have to have your core strength to be able to hold yourself." Great power comes from Maleficent's wings, which are stolen from her dark fairy in the new film. As for Jolie, the actress flies with more ferocity than any A-list Disney-backed villain to date. "I feel like the luckiest girl in the world that I get to fly," says Jolie with a laugh. "I really feel like I'm flying!" Maleficent is set for a May 30 release.

Angelina Jolie's Daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Joins Mom in Maleficent as Princess Aurora

Viv's putting her movie star genes to work! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's adorable 5-year-old daughter Vivienne Pitt is a natural as young Princess Aurora beside her famous mom in new stills released from the upcoming Disney thriller Maleficent. In one pic, Vivienne, who was 4-years-old at the time of filming, gives Jolie's "Mistress of All Evil" character an inquisitive stare while wearing a buttercup yellow dress.Jolie, 38, dressed in Maleficent's terrifying all-black costume (complete with terrifying horns!), looks down at her youngest daughter with an evil glare, while Viv nervously twiddles her fingers in response. The blue-eyed, blonde-haired little one strikes a remarkable resemblance to her dad in the still."It had to be Viv," Jolie recently told Entertainment Weekly of why her daughter was cast in the young Sleeping Beauty role. (Elle Fanning plays the grown-up version of Aurora in the movie, opposite newcomer Brenton Thwaites as the dashing Prince Phillip.) "We think it's fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That's not our goal for Brad and I at all." "The other 3-and 4-year-old [actors] wouldn't come near me," Jolie continued. "It had to be a child that liked me and wasn't afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws." Indeed, as seen in the photos, Jolie is terrifying as Maleficent, with her blood red lips, a black cape, and elaborate horned headdress.Jolie confessed that the costume even scared her five other kids -- Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 7, and Vivienne's twin brother Knox. "When Pax saw me for the first time, he ran away and got upset," she told EW.Luckily, Pax overcame his fear and even has a cameo with Zahara in the movie. "I had to walk by them being very mean," Jolie recalled of the terrifying scene where she places a curse on newborn baby Aurora. "Of course, I wanted to stop and wink at them." Maleficent, due out May 30, tells the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the titular villainess.
