Angelina Jolie wanted to cut her nude scenes from 'By The Sea'

The 40-year-old director, who underwent a preventative double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in February 2013 to reduce her chances of being developing breast cancer as it runs in her family, admits she worried about appearing naked in a bathtub in the new film, in which she also stars alongside husband Brad Pitt, as a result of the procedure. She said: "There were lots of scenes I wanted to change or cut. I realized it was going to be me [naked] in that bathtub. But I told myself, put all of that aside. Like, you can't change or cut this scene because you've had a mastectomy, or because we're married and people are going to analyze this or that. That would be cheating."The Oscar winner also feared the film, which tells the tale of an unhappily married couple, would drive a wedge between her and Brad, 51, as they filmed it on their "honeymoon" in Malta shortly after tying the knot in the South of France in August 2014.She told the New York Times: "A few days into filming I thought: This is such a bad idea. What was I thinking? This is going to destroy us before we've even gotten started. But by the time we got to the end of the film, we'd argued, challenged each other, disappointed each other, had good days, bad days, all of it. We'd pushed through, learned something about each other, found a new working relationship and came to like the idea of 'Yeah, it gets really bad, but you work it out.' "

Angelina Jolie Pitt breaks down the exclusive new By the Sea trailer

Earlier this year, Angelina Jolie Pitt told EW that writing, directing and starring in By the Sea (in theaters Nov. 13) was made easier thanks to her leading man, husband Brad Pitt.“It was comforting in that he’s a great actor and we produced it together. So we were creating together and we were partners in making it. We were there to lean on each other,” she said. “But, of course, it comes with wanting to make sure I do right by him. The pressure of making sure that I was doing a good enough job because I care about this actor more than other actors! It was an emotionally charged set — even though the characters are very different from us, when you act you still express real emotion.” A closer look at those real (and raw) feelings are on display in the film’s latest trailer. Set in France in the mid-70s, By the Sea follows Roland and Vanessa (Pitt and Jolie Pitt), a couple going through a difficult period while together at a picturesque hotel.“I wanted to suggest and guide and give hints to the audience but not bore them or reveal all before the film itself,” Jolie Pitt writes in an email to EW about the new By the Sea trailer, which debuts exclusively above. “I like trailers that don’t explain the whole film; that tell you exactly what to expect.” As for the plot and what Roland and Vanessa are grappling with, Jolie Pitt prefers to give viewers a sense of the tone and tenor of her new film, her third feature as director.“It isn’t my intention to hide anything from the audience, but the film is a complicated adult drama where things are often not what they seem,” she writes. “The voyeurism for example, most people will assume only that it is titillating. But it has deeper resonance to the story. I like films that leave questions and cause discussion.” EW asked Jolie PItt what she hopes audiences will take away from seeing this new trailer. “This trailer hints at one of the bolder aspects in the narrative. But what will they take away? I’m not sure,” she writes. “I hope they are curious and that when they see the film they find it interesting. That’s all I can hope for.”By the Sea, which will have its world premiere at the AFI Fest next week, is out on Nov. 13. Watch the new trailer above.

Conservative netizens had criticized the film, saying it is “anti-Japanese” and wrongfully focuses on the imperial army’s brutality. The film tells the story of Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini, who endured torture during his two years at a Japanese prison camp during World War II. Japanese actor and musician Takamasa Ishihara, known as Miyavi, plays a sadistic guard. An employee at Bitters End Inc., which will be distributing the film, said the backlash caused the delay in the film’s release in Japan. The movie is currently scheduled to play at a theater in Shibuya, but will expand to other locations, she said. The film is based on the book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” by author Laura Hillenbrand. The movie’s title in Japan will be “Fukutsu-no Otoko Unbroken,” which can be translated as “The Indomitable Man: Unbroken.” The film is a true story of a man “who survived hell for two years at a prisoner camp,” the promotional poster says.“Unbroken” was nominated in three categories, including best cinematography, at the Academy Awards in February, but didn’t win any awards.
