Bill Gates and Angelina Jolie have been named the most admired man and woman in the world. The tech mogul and the actress-turned-humanitarian have topped the list, compiled by YouGov - a market research company based in London - since separate male and female categories were introduced in 2015.Both beat out several influential leaders and personalities including both Barack and Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and even the Dalai Llama. The list features 20 men and 20 women whom were selected after 37,000 people were polled in 35 countries.Falling closely behind Gates for 'most admired man' are former US President Barack Obama, actor and martial artist Jackie Chan, President of China Xi Jingping and Chinese business magnate Jack Ma.Rounding out the top five for the women's category are former US first lady Michelle Obama, TV host Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth II and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The list turned out a bit differently when focused on individual countries. In the US, Obama was named as the most admired man, followed by President Donald Trump and the late Reverend Billy Graham. For women, the list looked mostly the same with Michelle Obama taking first place, Oprah coming in second and Queen Elizabeth taking third. On the worldwide list, the majority of women featured are from the entertainment industry with appearances by Emma Watson, Madonna, Taylor Swift and Gal Gadot. For the list of males, many are business moguls and sports stars including Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, Michael Jordan and David Beckham. YouGov also created a chart comparing how Obama and Trump rank in every country that was polled this year.On the worldwide list, Trump places at 17 and Obama precedes him in every country except in Russia.

The Queen comes second to Angelina Jolie in an international popularity poll

The Queen comes second to Angelina Jolie in a YouGov international popularity poll. Of more interest to courtiers – given the rise of republican movements in the Commonwealth – is that HM’s popularity is now at a high in New Zealand, Australia and Canada. Europeans are not so keen. Countries where the Queen’s distant cousins rule – Denmark, Spain and Sweden – are no keener on her than Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. Hence the suspicion that one is a Brexit supporter. When Sadiq Khan joined the Privy Council, in 2009, as a Labour transport minister, London’s new mayor took his copy of the Koran to the ceremony because the Palace didn’t have one. Christian privy counsellors keep a copy of the Bible on which they swear, signed by Lord President of the Council, Chris Grayling MP. Officials considered buying a stock of Korans for future Muslim PCs but found that signing them is considered sacrilege.Screen beauty Kate Beckinsale, 42, with three films due for release, recalls an undignified start to her Hollywood career. Arriving for the premiere of 2001’s flop, Pearl Harbor, she wore a figure-hugging white dress, sans underwear. Her stylist fretted that, when photography flashguns went off, ‘we’ll see your landing strip. So she dipped a razor into a glass of champagne and went up my skirt and shaved it off’. Ah, Hollywood. It’ll never lose its glamour, will it? Before walking onstage to accept his Bafta for Wolf Hall, Mark Rylance, 56, gropes on the floor for his pork pie hat. He always wears one to be photographed or filmed. Is it embarrassment over encroaching baldness?Prince Harry says children are disappointed to meet a real-life prince who doesn’t look the part, adding: ‘So I am going to pack a crown and a cape.’ No need for that. When (if?) he marries he can expect a dukedom, almost certainly of Clarence, which entails a scarlet robe and gold coronet with eight strawberry leaves.
