Angelina Jolie has called upon the international community to end the Syrian civil war and increase aid for refugees. The actress visited a refugee camp in Azraq, Northern Jordan, in her role as special envoy of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and met Syrian children displaced by the conflict.Five years into the Syrian conflict, she said brutal violence rages while the UN Security Council remains divided on a political solution. During the trip, following on from her surprise visit as a guest at the UN summit in London yesterday, the Hollywood A-lister mingled with laughing children and delivered a speech. In her role, she focuses on major crises resulting in mass population displacements and engaging with decision-makers on global displacement issues.Yesterday, she stunned delegates from 80 countries with a speech at the major peacekeeping summit, saying the organisation's reputation had been undermined by cases of sexual abuse. She told a summit of ministers from around the world in London's Lancaster House that countries had to meet their commitments to peacekeeping missions and aid appeals.The summit communique called for the UN to double the number of women in military and police contingents involved in peacekeeping operations by 2020 and promised a 'zero tolerance' approach to sexual exploitation and abuse by troops.Jolie-Pitt told ministers and dignitaries at the meeting: 'The fact is that increasing the number of UN peacekeepers alone will not be enough to resolve the conflicts that we are experiencing.'It has to be accompanied by a new way of conducting peacekeeping, one that has the rights and protection and involvement of women at its heart.' She added: 'The signing of an agreement is actually the easy part.'What is harder and what is much more important is implementation.'We are living through a time of public disillusionment with commitments on paper that are not met in reality; with UN Security Council resolutions that are ignored, aid appeals that are only partially met and fail to address root causes and allegations of sexual misconduct that are not investigated or prosecuted.'In my view, from my experience in the field, prosecutions around the world would mean more to the survivors of violence than any number of new Security Council resolutions.'

She takes her duties as United Nations Special Envoy very seriously. So it was no surprise that Angelina Jolie arrived at Thursday's UN conference looking chic and sophisticated in a black outfit. The actress's appearance included a speech to the audience which included UK defence Secretary Michael Fallon and U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter.She looked in good spirits as she arrived, waving to onlookers and greeting UK Vice Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Gordon Messenger.According to the UN Peacekeeping Twitter account, Angelina praised servicemen and women during her address.'I pay tribute to the men and women who serve... for their commitment and their sacrifices,' she said. Angelina has been involved with the United Nations since 2001, when she was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador - she was promoted to the rank of Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee in 2012. Since then, she has completed more than 40 field missions, visiting countries including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. She has also been a vocal campaigner on refugee rights, and against female genital mutilation and the use of rape as a weapon of war.Back in June, she made a star turn at the U.S. State Department when the actress shared the podium with Secretary of State John Kerry and urged finding a solution to the refugee crisis.In a speech, she said today's enormous refugee problem is a threat to worldwide peace and stability. 'We face a very clear choice: to continue as we are and see displacement and insecurity grow, or to come together with other nations and find a new approach, one that does not focus solely on aid and resettlement but on solution, stability, and returns,' she said.Away from the spotlight, the mother-of-six recently celebrated her second wedding anniversary with Brad Pitt. The couple have been together since 2004 but only married last year at their Château Miraval estate in France. Angelina and Brad marked the occasion with an intimate dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel, according to reports.

Angelina Jolie is opening up about giving birth to her daughter Shiloh in Africa and the struggles that other women in that region go through during childbirth.The 41-year-old actress appeared on BBC Radio 4′s Women’s Hour on Friday morning (June 17) and talked about how these problems in Africa can be easily fixed.“I went to a hospital in Namibia, where I was having my daughter, and I was in breech. I needed a C-section, and I knew I was in breach because I had had the money to have an ultrasound,” Angelina said. “But I found even the local hospital with many, many women – and this was a good hospital – did not have an ultrasound machine.”“So the amount of women that didn’t know they were in breach, the amount of babies and complications when they got into labor, with one simple machine,” Angelina continued. “But I know there are many extraordinary people who are working on this and women’s health around the world, and many groups dedicated solely to that, and their work is so needed and these solutions can come.”

Pupils from the Thomas Aveling School in Rochester have a claim to fame – they had lunch with Hollywood A-lister Angelina Jolie Pitt.Freya Dhiman, 12, and Connor Ross, 14, along with teacher Alyce Le Brunn-Healey, were invited to meet the Oscar winner at the BBC’s Broadcasting House, where she delivered a speech as part of the BBC’s World on the Move Day.As previously reported, fellow pupil Paulina Zubryzyck was also given the chance to ask the UN refugee agency’s special envoy a question about the worldwide refugee crisis, live on Radio 4.Paulina asked how pupils should support young migrants entering local communities. Ms Jolie Pitt said the best thing to do was “reach out” and “be a real friend”.Youngsters from the school have also been involved in the BBC’s School Report Day, which included interviewing their teachers about the EU referendum.Mrs Le Brunn-Healey said: “Meeting Angelina Jolie Pit was a brilliant opportunity for the students at Thomas Aveling School and we all felt really inspired by her fantastic keynote speech.“I think Connor and Freya would agree that having lunch with an A-lister was a surreal moment but she was really interested in what the students were doing for charity, for BBC News School Report and for the school debate team.”

Actor and Bake Off presenter among five guest editors examining topics from sexual violence in conflict to beekeeping.Angelina Jolie Pitt is to examine sexual violence in conflict and women’s health, while Mary Berry will discuss topics including gardening as therapy and beekeeping, in their roles as special guest editors of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.Jolie, a United Nations special envoy who was appointed a visiting professor at the London School of Economics last month, will host the final edition of the week in which Woman’s Hour is taken over by five guest editors, from 13-17 June.Berry, the co-host of BBC1’s The Great British Bake Off, will cover an eclectic range of topics including the legacy of the Guides and how you can express yourself with homemade presents and handwritten notes.“I have chosen subjects close to my heart. I still have my cooking badge and wonder how guiding has changed from my day,” Berry said. “Gardening as therapy – after a busy day recipe testing or filming inside, I cannot wait to get into the garden. And I’m thinking of keeping bees.”
The other guest editors include Jackie Kay, Scotland’s makar, the country’s poet laureate, who will examine topics such as how writers are responding to the stories of refugees, and living with a skin condition.The England and Chelsea footballer Eniola Aluko will explore subjects including encouraging girls from deprived backgrounds into sport to develop their confidence, and balancing a social life with a busy job.It is the third year that the BBC has run a takeover week, with the first featuring JK Rowling and Doreen Lawrence, mother of the murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.Last year’s guest editors included Kim Cattrall and the Ultimo lingerie founder Michelle Mone.The daily magazine programme, presented by Jane Garvey and Jenni Murray, launched a new Late Night Woman’s Hour strand last August, fronted by the DJ and writer Lauren Laverne.
