Becoming a Disney princess? Check! Working with Angelina Jolie? Check! Elle Fanning got the best of both worlds while filming the upcoming Disney thriller Maleficent. The actress opened up about working with the Oscar winner as she attended the Marie Claire Fresh Faces Party in West Hollywood on Tuesday, April 8."It was super exciting. Everything was so fun," the 16-year-old, dressed in Versace at the event, told Us Weekly at Soho House. "Working with Angelina -- it's kind of a dream to say that you even met her and let alone to be in scenes with her. [It] was really really cool." "She really got into her character in a way," she added on what she learned from the star. "Like she was very, so into the details of her clothes. She came into rehearsals on the first day with her Maleficent staff and she was in normal clothes but then had that. She was like, 'I have to get used to it. It's part of my character.' I thought that was so cool." Fanning plays Princess Aurora in the live-action reboot of the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. Jolie enlisted her real-life daughter Vivienne Pitt, 5, to appear as a younger Aurora."I loved being Maleficent," Jolie, 38, said in Entertainment Weekly last month. "I was quite sad to put my staff down and put my horns away because somehow, she just lives in a different world." "But I did have to take my staff home to practice walking with it in my cloak," she continued. "Then I would go outside and scream at the bushes to expand my voice and play with my voice. So, mom was a bit nutso for a period." Maleficent hits theaters in May 2014.

Jon Voight has yet to see Maleficent, but he's confident that his granddaughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt will be every bit as enchanting as her mom Angelina Jolie, who plays the titular villain in the Disney film. E! News caught up with the 75-year-old actor Monday, and he lit up when asked about the 5-year-old cutie's cameo as a young Princess Aurora. (Elle Fanning, 16, plays the teenage version of the princess.) "I'm excited," Voight said at the Ray Donovan screening in North Hollywood Monday. "I don't know anything about it, but I heard some things about it that Angie had said. It was funny, when they were trying to help her in the work, you know? Apparently the people at Disney were having a lot of fun because [Brad Pitt] and Angie were running with the camera trying to get, 'Okay now smile! You're out in the field.' You know, stuff like that." (Pax Jolie-Pitt and Zahara Jolie-Pitt also have cameo roles.) In a prior interview, Jolie explained why her youngest daughter was cast. "We think it's fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That's not our goal for Brad and I at all," she told Entertainment Weekly. "But the other 3- and 4-year-old [actors] wouldn't come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn't afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv."

“There is evil in this world – hatred and revenge,” says Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent in the new featurette for the upcoming Disney film. The origin of this evil in the world of the animated classic “Sleeping Beauty” is precisely what Disney’s live action “Maleficent” sets out to explain. The “Legacy” featurette includes behind-the-scenes interviews with Jolie and Elle Fanning, who plays Princess Aurora, as they discuss their views of this new take on the Disney villain. “We’ve respected the classic. We’ve tried to bring you what you love about this story,” Jolie explains. “We also hope to bring a world that you’ve never seen before.” Screenwriter Linda Woolverton says the new movie explores Maleficent’s past, her motives for cursing Aurora and more – all from the villain’s point of view. “This film gives us an opportunity to find out the history of Maleficent and what drove her to the dark side,” says helmer Robert Stromberg. “Maleficent” bows in theaters May 30.

Scary prospects for Disney’s ‘Maleficent’

Disney’s dark fantasy film, “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie as the title villainess, may be too dark and scary to be profitable, one Wall Street analyst wrote in a report on Monday. The $130-million-budget movie, which tells the “Sleeping Beauty” tale from the perspective of the evil Maleficent, is set to debut May 30 and will likely result in Disney being forced into a write-down, Wells Fargo’s Marci Ryvicker wrote in a report.“[E]xpectations for a ‘Maleficent’ write-off seem relatively widespread,” she wrote. With more than eight weeks to go before “Maleficent” unspools, few on Wall Street are ready to take such a bold stance.“It’s definitely in the ‘not a sure thing’ bucket,” a second analyst said of the re-imagined fairy tale. RBC Capital’s David Bank is penciling in a total US haul of $150 million. The movie appears to be pitched at young adults rather than at the more traditional audience for a Disney princess movie: small children.
Jolie appears in the movie with enhanced sharp high cheekbones and headgear with horns. The actress struck a deal with fashion designer Stella McCartney to create a capsule collection for children aged 4 to 14 based on the movie. It’s hard to deny strong interest in the movie — or perhaps simply Jolie. An official trailer posted March 18 has gained 4 million views on YouTube. A January trailer garnered 13 million views.“Maleficent” has 1.8 million Facebook fans, more than any other non-franchise film with a 2014 release date, according to Jason Klein, co-CEO and founder of Listen First Media.Whether that translates into a big box-office number is anyone’s guess.A write-down, while very much an open question, could slow the momentum of Disney, whose “Frozen” last week became the highest-grossing animated movie of all time.
