Actress Angelina Jolie visited Capitol Hill Wednesday to help a bipartisan group of senators roll out a new version of the Violence Against Women Act. Jolie, who brought daughter Zahara along with her to Washington, got emotional when addressing a packed press conference - and shamed Congress' 'silence' on the matter as they've not reauthorized the bill in nearly a decade. 'Most of all, I want to acknowledge - most of all, I want to acknowledge the children who are terrified and suffering at this moment,' she said, her voice cracking. 'And the many people for whom this legislation comes too late.''The women who have suffered through this system with little or no support, they still carry the pain and trauma of their abuse,' the A-list actress continued. 'The young adults who have survived abuse and emerged stronger not because of the child protective system, but despite it.' And the women and children who have died, who could have been saved,' she said. Four senators opened the program - Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin and Dianne Feinstein and Republican Sens. Joni Ernst and Lisa Murkowski - and said they believed the bill they were introducing could get enough bipartisan support to override a filibuster threat. Feinstein, a Democrat from California, marveled at the size of the audience when she stepped up to the podium. 'I walked in, and I thought, oh my goodness, look at the numbers. They must really like the bill,' she joked. 'And then I figured you know, could it be one California woman who has come here from a city known as Los Angeles?' 'And I think it may be part of that. A good part of it,' she said, laughing. 'Never assume that it is us.' Jolie, who's no stranger to Washington or political causes - and even met with Environmental Protection Agency head Michael Regan before her appointment on Capitol Hill - fussed at lawmakers for not reauthorizing the bill since 2013. 'The reason that many people struggle to leave abusive situations is that they've been made to feel worthless,' she said. 'When there is silence from a Congress too busy to renew the Violence Against Women Act for a decade, it reinforces that sense of worthlessness.' 'You think I guess my abusers right. I guess I'm not worth very much,' the actress continued. 'That's why passing this law is one of the most important votes US senators will cast this year,' she told the lawmakers. Ernst, an Iowa Republican, talked about how the bill was personal to her, a survivor of abuse. 'I know firsthand what happens when someone you trust abuses you,' she told the crowd. Jolie said the 'ugly truth' was that 'violence in homes is normalized in our country.' 'The idea of sovereignty of a family home is being used to abuse the members within it,' the actress said. Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, said the group was 'perilously close to 60 votes,' which would enable the bill to pass the Senate. 'I don't know if there's any formal White House endorsement,' he also said. President Joe Biden has often spoken about his role as its chief sponsor when getting the first VAWA across the line in 1994 while serving in the U.S. Senate. He condemned the Republicans for dragging their feet in 2012 and 2013 when the bill was being reauthorized last and he was serving as vice president. The new version came together after the so-called 'boyfriend loophole' got scrapped. The boyfriend loophole has to do with whether unmarried partners could have guns if one of them was found guilty of domestic abuse. The National Rifle Association - and with it likely Republican votes - were against its inclusion. At the press conference, Feinstein bemoaned its exclusion. 'Now, this isn't a perfect bill and I regret that the boyfriend loophole is not addressed. And many of us have tried very hard to get there. But it's a good bill,' the California Democrat said. 'And we finally need to get a Violence AGainst Women Act reauthorization to the president's desk.' 'It's not perfect but it's a big advance,' she added.

This Angelina Jolie lookalike might be the best celebrity doppelgänger of all time

We bet even Angie herself is confused when she looks at this TikToker. We're calling it: this Angelina Jolie lookalike is very possibly the most convincing we've seen yet.She may be, hands down, one of the most beautiful famous people going, but now there are two of her. This information comes courtesy of Russian TikTok user Tatyana Duke aka the doppelgänger herself. Fun fact, by the way – doppelgänger it's a German word which means, literally, “double go-er”. Every day's a school day, kids…Anyway – Tatyana (who has 315k followers on the social video sharing platform) is racking up the likes, 23.2k at time of writing, for a clip of herself backing slowly into a blown-up poster image of Angelina Jolie. She's made up to resemble the 46-year-old actor, with subtle cat-eye eyeliner, nude lipgloss and luminous foundation, with brushed back, tousled raven hair – and she wears a black T-shirt, as does Jolie in the poster in question. As she moves backwards and the poster in the background comes into focus, the resemblance between the two women is pretty breathtaking. To drive home the point, the whole thing is done to the sound effect of Apple Pay, ie the distinctive “da-ding” sound that goes off when your iPhone recognises you with Face ID and unlocks the pay functionality. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if this woman's face could unlock Angelina's iPhone – they look so alike. This clip isn't the first time she's styled herself a la Angie; her TikTok profile picture is a very Maleficent-esque image of herself wearing devil horns, posing just like Jolie's image in the film poster. In the Disney dark fantasy film franchise, Jolie plays a once-benevolent fairy who turns vengeful after being scorned by her human lover who abandons her in favour of his ambitions to be king.Tatyana is rocking the trademark Maleficent look – horns, blood-red lips, long black velvet robe – in many of her videos. Meanwhile, she's posted other videos of herself doing cosplay in various looks from Jolie's other major role: a seriously convincing all-black Lara Croft (from the Tomb Raider franchise) costume – complete with long French braid and gun belt. Which all kind of makes sense when you translate her bio from Russian to English: it reads “Russian Angelina Jolie. Maleficent and Lara Croft cosplay.” Given her TikTok content, being a professional doppelganger legitimately looks like a fun time: she's posted videos of herself hanging out with an eclectic range of other lookalikes (BoJack Horseman, Spiderman, Cruella De Vil, to name but a few…) at what look like cosplay conferences. She also mixes things up from her Maleficent/Lara Croft looks: some more recent videos show her rocking a blonde wig, headdress and long, flowing white skirt, taking on Jolie's look from 2018 Marvel film Eternals, where the actor played Thena, an elite Eternal warrior.Of course, Jolie has already grown her own doppelganger – her 15-year-old daughter with ex-husband Brad Pitt, Shiloh, looks just like her, with the resemblance growing ever more uncanny as the years go by. Genetics, eh! We've seen a lot of celebrity lookalikes recently, thanks to a TikTok trend bringing them to the forefront: including Jennifer Aniston's lookalike, Amanda Seyfried's doppelgänger and a Kylie Jenner lookalike. The trend has stepped up for 2022: there was faux Margot Robbie just a few days ago, aka Danish computer science student Emma Sofija – who used the popular celebrity twin filter to showcase just how much she looks like the Suicide Squad actor. Last month, we also had the spit image of Phoebe Dynevor – aka TikTok user, @ohlookitsbrooke, who shared a video where she spoke about how much she looked like the Bridgerton star.

Angelina Jolie used her platform to raise the voice of a struggling Afghan woman. The movie star, 46, took to Instagram on Saturday to share an excerpt from a letter recently sent to her.Jolie called on her 12.2 million followers to 'track what's happening in Afghanistan' and 'ensure they're not forgotten.' 'A young woman in #Afghanistan sent me this letter. I’m protecting her identity, but she hasn’t been able to go back to school since the Taliban seized power,' the mom-of-six wrote. The actress shared more information, adding, 'Now, with women being arrested simply for taking part in peaceful protests, she writes “I might never be able to go outside again or even be able to speak as I am a girl.”'An excerpt from the letter was shared, which stated: '“I feel like women don’t have any right to speak or put their word forward. The rights of the woman are taken away from them and they are not allowed to do anything in the country. Few weeks back when the Taliban arrested 2 of the women who raised their voices in order to ask for the rights of woman and freedom, I just thought, that this is the end and I might never be able to go outside again or even be able to speak as I am a Girl.”'The carousel post began with white letters reading 'A recent letter from an Afghan girl' typed over a blurred handwritten letter. The next slides had black backgrounds with poignant messaging on top. The first one introduced, 'Women's rights activists missing in Afghanistan.' The post went on to list the names of the women who have gone missing, and the dates they were taken. The activists were named as Alia Azizi, Parwana Ibrahimkhel, Mursal Ayar, Zahra Mohammadi, and Tamana Zaryab Paryani and her three sisters.A final slide reiterated what Angelina had written in her caption: 'Please track what is happening in Afghanistan, where young women are being taken from their homes at night at gunpoint and disappeared, and new restrictions are being imposed on the freedom of women and girls day by day. 'Please help ensure they’re not forgotten.'This isn't the first time the philanthropist has turned to Instagram to lift up Afghan women in need. After joining the photo-sharing community in August, she shared a different letter from a young woman concerned about the future of Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover.'Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely,' Angelina said. 'So I've come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights.' The woman, unidentified, expressed that she was living in fear and said 'all our dreams are gone.' Angelina said to her followers, 'It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country. The humanitarian, who's a former U.N. goodwill ambassador spoke out about the war, saying, 'To spend so much time and money, to have blood shed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand.'Watching for decades how Afghan refugees - some of the most capable people in the world - are treated like a burden is also sickening. Knowing that if they had the tools and respect, how much they would do for themselves. And meeting so many women and girls who not only wanted an education, but fought for it,' she stressed. Jolie said she would 'continue to look for ways to help.'

Oscar-winning star Angelina Jolie treated her 17-year-old daughter Zahara to a shopping spree at Foxtail Salon in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon. While stocking up on beauty supplies at the Silver Lake-based retailer, the 46-year-old actress rocked a beige coat, which was belted to accentuate her trim waist, over a pair of black trousers. She completed her effortlessly chic ensemble with brown sandals, glasses and black face mask amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The mother-of-six styled her beautiful brunette locks in a sleek bun for her one-on-one outing with eldest daughter, who she shares with ex Brad Pitt.Zahara rocked a white cardigan, long grey tank top, dark-wash denim jeans with a rip on the left knee and white sneakers. The teen, who toted two shopping bags, sported waist-length, ombré blue box braids. While it's unknown which products the duo picked up, the store carries Davines' shampoo and conditioner, made from natural origin ingredients.Jolie adopted Zahara in 2005, a year after she'd met Pitt while the pair filmed Mr and Mrs Smith. He was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time. The former couple met on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005; after dating for a decade they tied the knot in September 2014.Angelina filed for divorce in 2016 and their divorce was finalized in April 2019 while the custody of their children is still in the courts. They have six children together: Maddox, 20, Pax, 18, Zahara, Shiloh, 15, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 13. In September, it was revealed that Brad requested a review of his child custody case with Angelina, after a court disqualified a private judge who granted him joint custody. Lawyers for the star filed a petition for review with the California Supreme Court after the disqualification of Judge John Ouderkirk effectively voided the joint custody ruling, according to People.A California appeals court disqualified the judge in July, agreeing with Jolie in that the judge, Judge John Ouderkirk, did not sufficiently disclose business relationships with Pitt's attorneys. In Pitt's petition, lawyers claim that elimination of Ouderkirk 'effectively upended the constitutionally authorized temporary judging system in California' and subsequently 'throws open the door to disqualification challenges at any point during a case, even if the party raising the motion has long been on notice about the alleged grounds for disqualification.'In addition, lawyers for the actor allege that Jolie was 'made aware of Judge Ouderkirk's significant professional history with Pitt's counsel from the very start,' yet did not seek disqualification until years later.'After more than four years of contentious litigation, every day of which has harmed the children and their father, an important and considered custody decision will be entirely undone as a result of an administrative error that is wholly unrelated to the merits of the custody dispute itself,' the lawyers claimed.'California law requires that a party seeking disqualification of a judge file a written statement objecting to continued proceedings before the judge 'at the earliest practicable opportunity after discovery of the facts constituting the ground for disqualification,' the petition states. 'Failure to do so constitutes waiver or forfeiture of the party's right to seek disqualification.'Theodore J. Boutrous Jr., a lawyer for Pitt, said in a statement to DailyMail.com that the actor was requesting a review as the judge was 'improperly disqualified' following a 'lengthy legal process' which involved numerous witnesses and experts.'We are seeking review in the California Supreme Court because the temporary judge, who had been appointed and repeatedly renewed by both sides, was improperly disqualified after providing a detailed, fact-based custodial decision, following a lengthy legal process with multiple witnesses and experts,' read the statement.'The lower court's ruling will reward parties who are losing child custody cases, and condone their gamesmanship, by allowing them to wait and see about the likely direction of the case before seeking the disqualification of the judge.'Condoning the use of this type of strategic "lie in wait" disqualification challenge will cause irreparable harm to both the children and families involved in this case, and other families in other cases, by unnecessarily prolonging the resolution of these disputes in an already overburdened court system. Allowing this kind of crafty litigation strategy will deprive parents of irreplaceable time with their children as judges are disqualified for minor reasons in the midst of their cases.'The lower court's ruling is bad for children and bad for California’s overburdened judicial system.'The decision to disqualify Ouderkirk came in July, with the court ruling: 'Judge Ouderkirk's ethical breach, considered together with the information disclosed concerning his recent professional relationships with Pitt's counsel, might cause an objective person, aware of all the facts, reasonably to entertain a doubt as to the judge's ability to be impartial.''Disqualification is required.'It is unclear what dealings Ouderkirk is involved in with Pitt's attorneys. He also didn't allow the couple's kids to testify, despite Jolie wanting them to.However, Pitt's team hit back, telling Page Six in a statement: 'The appeals court ruling was based on a technical procedural issue.''The facts haven't changed. There is an extraordinary amount of factual evidence which led the judge - and the many experts who testified - to reach their clear conclusion about what is best in the children's best interests.'We will continue to do what’s necessary legally based on the detailed findings of what’s best for the children.'A source close to the actor said Pitt is disappointed by the legal setback, telling People: 'Brad believes there is overwhelming evidence that the current situation isn't good for the kids. This just sets things back for everyone.'Jolie filed for sole custody after filing for divorce after an incident on the couple's private plane during which she said he allegedly became violent and abusive.Despite her protestations, Judge Ouderkirk earlier this year granted Pitt tentative joint custody of the kids. Now, it's unclear if that will remain in place. The judge already ruled the pair divorced, but separated the child custody issues.Like many celebrity couples, Pitt and Jolie opted to hire their own judge to increase their privacy in the divorce proceedings.
