Angelina Jolie uploaded a heartfelt statement on Instagram on Friday to share she was 'stepping down' from her role as a United Nations refugee agency envoy after 21 years in order to work more closely with those 'directly affected.'The actress, 47, penned a message to her followers to open up about her departure, adding that the, 'UNHCR is full of amazing people.' The star, who recently traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with politicians to discuss crime victim legislation, also explained that she was 'dedicated' to working with refugees 'for the rest of my life.' The actress uploaded a throwback photo of herself amidst her role as a refugee envoy for the U.N., along with a meaningful message. 'After over 20 years, I am stepping down today from my work with the UN Refugee Agency,' she announced. 'I believe in many things the UN does, particularly the lives it saves through emergency relief.' Angelina added that the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has 'amazing people' involved who strive to make, 'a difference to people’s lives every day.' The star wholeheartedly expressed that, 'Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I am dedicated to working with them for the rest of my life.' Angelina then gave her reasoning for stepping down from her envoy role, explaining that she, 'will be working now with organizations led by people most directly affected by conflict, that give the greatest voice to them.' The United Nations refugee agency and the Oscar winner also released a joint statement on Friday expressing that the actress will still work, 'to engage on a broader set of humanitarian and human rights issues.' Jolie first started working with the U.N. refugee agency in 2001 and was appointed its special envoy in 2012 - she was among the most high-profile of the organization's ambassadors.The star 'carried out more than 60 field missions to bear witness to stories of suffering as well as hope and resilience', said the U.N, and had most recently traveled to Burkina Faso.U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said: 'After a long and successful time with UNHCR, I appreciate her desire to shift her engagement and support her decision.'I know the refugee cause will remain close to her heart, and I am certain she will bring the same passion and attention to a wider humanitarian portfolio.'In an opinion piece published in The Guardian last month, Jolie alluded to frustration with the lack of global progress in ending sexual violence in conflict. She had written that, 'when it comes to hard choices about how to implement these promises, we run into the same problems time and again.'Jolie began visiting refugee camps in 2001, and was appointed as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador that same year. At the time, the then-high commissioner said he hoped the then-26-year-old actress could direct young people's attention to the plight of refugees.On Thursday, Angelina shared a post showing her involvement to advocate for crime victim legislation. She revealed that she had traveled to Washington D.C. to discuss the topic with politicians along with her 17-year-old daughter, Zahara. The photo uploaded in the post shows the actress and her daughter conversing with the President pro tempore of the United States Senate, Patrick Leahy. Tis the season of goodwill — but there is no truce in the six-year battle between actress Angelina Jolie and ex-husband Brad Pitt.Jolie, 47 appears to be continuing to pursue Pitt, 58, via an anonymous court action between ‘Jane Doe’ and the FBI, which investigated an alleged altercation between the pair on a private jet in 2016.Pitt was accused of pouring red wine and beer over his ex and their children, and of assaulting them on the plane — claims which he denies.The allegations were investigated by the FBI, but no charges were brought.Details of the incident first surfaced in August this year, when a Freedom of Information court filing became public, and it can be revealed that the endgame is finally in sight. In new legal documents seen by this paper, the FBI has promised to give Jolie the documents from its investigation before the end of the month.According to court papers, during a recent status meeting, lawyers for ‘Jane Doe’ argued that she had been prevented from getting ‘qualified trauma care and domestic violence counselling to address harm suffered as the result of an in-air assault by John Doe’.They added that she needed the information in order to obtain ‘legal protection’ from her former husband.The suit was sparked after the FBI announced in September 2017 that there would be no charges brought over the plane incident.
Lawyers for the actress say that an FBI special agent prepared a statement of probable cause, which was presented to prosecutors, who then declined to proceed.Jolie’s legal team add that the ‘public mis-statement’ by the FBI over the closing of the investigation ‘contributed to the ongoing harm suffered by Ms Doe and the children by de-legitimising their experience’; and that she was not informed about the decision by the FBI.But sources in the Pitt camp disagree, suggesting the entire lawsuit is an aggressive media play by his former spouse. They insist both parties were given the report in 2017, and that Jolie was kept informed throughout.One said: ‘She has had the FBI report for six years and has used it in legal proceedings, so she has not been disadvantaged.‘The legal authorities investigated at the time and decided not to press charges.’The FBI, meanwhile, has said it will give Jolie the documents she has been seeking ‘in December’. It’s not clear, however, what exactly will be in those documents — and what the Bureau will choose to redact.Jolie and Pitt have been contesting custody of their six children — Maddox, 21; Pax, 19; Zahara, 17; Shiloh, 16; and twins Vivienne and Knox, 14 — ever since their split in 2016.The pair started a romance after co-starring in the 2005 movie Mr And Mrs Smith.
Jolie had already adopted Maddox at that stage — from an orphanage in Cambodia in 2002, while she was married to actor Billy Bob Thornton — but Pitt became the boy’s adoptive father in 2006. Together the couple then adopted three-year-old Pax from Vietnam; and baby Zahara from Ethiopia. They also had three children together: daughter Shiloh (in 2006) and twins Knox and Vivienne (in 2008).They were married in August 2014 at their house in rural France, but their legal union lasted just 25 months.In 2017, they hired a private judge — Judge John Ouderkirk, the same man who had married them — to mediate their divorce.Pitt was said to have quietly completed a ‘VIP rehab’; and admitted that he had been drinking too much and needed to go to AA meetings.Jolie accused Pitt of not paying her ‘meaningful support’ in 2018. He countered that he had loaned her $8 million to buy a home, and given a further $1.3 million for payment of bills.Initially, Jolie had primary custody of the children, who visited their father on a schedule. But in May 2021, Judge Ouderkirk granted Pitt 50/50 custody.Jolie then made a successful legal bid to disqualify Ouderkirk from the divorce case. A California appeals court ruled the judge had not sufficiently disclosed business relationships with Pitt’s attorneys, but did not overturn his 50/50 custody decision.Meanwhile, battle has also been joined over the couple’s French vineyard, Chateau Miraval. Jolie sold her 50 per cent stake in the Provencal winery last year — a move Pitt says was unlawful.

Angelina Jolie brought daughter Zahara, 17, to Washington DC as they advocated for crime victim legislation.The 47-year-old actress and the teenager born in Hawassa, Ethiopia - who were seen on an outing together in Los Angeles on Monday - were on Capitol Hill to talk to members of congress.Angelina took to Instagram to share a snap of Zahara chatting with President pro tempore of the United States Senate Patrick Leahy as they advocated for the Justice for All Reauthorization Act of 2022.The Tomb Raider star looked every bit the proud parent as she stared adoringly at her child as she chatted up the senior United States senator from Vermont. She shared a lengthy caption about the piece of legislation that aims to protect crime victims which began: 'I’m in DC this week supporting and working with the many people affected by and fighting for these issues as we jointly urge Congress to pass essential protections for abuse survivors and children in the end-of-year bill package.'There are many parts of the measure as it would create a new victims' right to evidence and agency reports along with aim to improve on forensic science, end the rape kit backlog, and even address racial disparities in wrongful convictions.
She listed out five key points as she wrote:
'1) To give crime survivors the right to their evidence and federal agency or police reports
'2) To end the rape kit backlog (Approximately 200,000 rape kits sit untested in police department and crime lab storage facilities across America)
'3) To improve forensic science and access to justice to exonerate innocent defendants (Black people in the U.S. are 7 times more likely than white people to be falsely convicted of serious crimes, and are significantly more likely to be the targets of police misconduct and to spend longer in prison before being exonerated)
'4) To help ensure survivors have the support and safety they vitally need (Annually, approximately 200,000 requests for DV shelter go unmet)
'5) To help states strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect before it occurs by prioritizing primary prevention and addressing racial bias in the child protective services system (Each year, at least 1 in 7 children experience abuse or neglect, and in 2019 alone, more than 1,800 children died in the United States due to abuse and neglect)'
The duo were busy on Capitol Hill as they also met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in addition to embers of the White House Gender Policy Council.
