Tomb Raider is only days away from returning to the big screen, this time with Alicia Vikander playing Lara Croft. Vikander inherited the role from Angelia Jolie, who first brought the character to life in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and reprised the skilled archaeologist in 2003's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider -- The Cradle of Life. At the time, Jolie had made a name for herself through movies like Hackers, Girl, Interrupted and Gone in 60 Seconds, but when she auditioned for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, director Simon West had trouble convincing others that she was the right woman for the job due to her unique personality. West recalled: [She] had a great, dark reputation about her. She lived quite an alternative lifestyle and didn't hold back her words. She spoke her mind, and she had a notorious reputation. It was quite hard for me to get her through the approval process at the studio, because I wanted an actress who was going to bring something to the part, and she brought this great Angelina Jolie mythology with her as this dark, crazy, wicked woman with a very particular and interesting personality. I wanted that mythology of Angelina Jolie to fuse with Lara Croft. While Angelina Jolie is still a household Hollywood name, like many other actors, there was a time when she wasn't famous, so she faced an uphill battle scoring the Lara Croft role. As Simon West explained to EW, at the time Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was casting, there hadn't been an actress who'd carried her own action-adventure movie in a while, so Paramount Pictures was initially looking at more established performers. Some of the names thrown out by the studio included Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ashley Judd and Jennifer Lopez, but West only saw Jolie for the Lara Croft part. It undoubtedly helped that Jolie had won an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for her turn as Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted, and but when combined with her natural personality, West knew Jolie was up to the task and subsequently altered Lara Croft and the movie's script to suit the actress' strengths.
While Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was met with mostly negative reviews (it ranks at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes), it performed decently at the box office, making over $274 million worldwide. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider -- The Cradle of Life's critical reception was a little better than its predecessor, and it made over $156 million worldwide, but when Angelina Jolie announced that she wouldn't play Lara Croft again, a second sequel was scrapped. More than a decade later, Tomb Raider is now being rebooted, and in contrast with the previous movies, this new entry will serve as an origin story for Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft.Angelina Jolie's time as Lara Croft has long since concluded, but you can see what Alicia Vikander does with the character when the Tomb Raider reboot hits theaters this Friday, March 16.

Angelina Jolie looked healthy and relaxed as she took her daughters shopping in Los Angeles at the weekend. The mother-of-six was seen with two of her three daughters - Vivienne and Zahara. The low key trio blended in with the rest of the Saturday shoppers as they stopped by a Starbucks for iced teas, which Angelina then carried.Meanwhile Zahara, 13, and nine-year-old Vivienne carried shopping bags, among them purchases from luxury card shop Papyrus, and wrapping store Paper Works.Casually dressed, the sisters walked side by side, chatting together.Their mother looked more smart, with the actress dressed in a chic oversized belted camel coat, and stiletto heeled black boots.Angelina's other children, 16-year-old Maddox, Pax, 14, Shiloh, 11, and Vivienne's twin Knox were not present for the outing in the Studio City area. The Tomb Raider star turned director and humanitarian, is currently single after splitting from Brad Pitt in September 2016.In a recent interview Angelina said she finds a 'real pleasure' in the fact she rarely gets any time to herself and wouldn't change things for the world.Asked how she relaxes, the 42-year-old told British glossy Hello: 'I really don't [relax]. I'm one of those people. It drives me nuts when people tell me to relax.'I think a lot of moms don't really rest. And somehow we find a real pleasure in that.'I mean, even if I try to take a bath, I'll end up with at least two of my kids in there with me, which is lovely. I wouldn't trade it at all.'When it comes to raising her children the By the Sea star believes the most important lesson she can teach them is to value others, as she thinks all the bad things in the world stem from selfishness and a lack of empathy. Asked what she teaches her children, she said: 'To value others. If you live life and walk around thinking of yourself and your own needs and desires then not only is it a selfish life, but it ends up being quite an unhappy life, I imagine. 'And that's where everything goes wrong,' she continued.'The wars and hostility, the ugliness and inhumanity in this world comes from this lack of being able to have real empathy for someone else.'If you can value others, I think things naturally balance out in your own life. When you don't live with ignorant perceptions and that smallness, you open up in a beautiful way.'Next year the busy actress/director/producer is set to reprise her role as dark fairy godmother Maleficent in the sequel to the 2014 Disney flick. Additionally, Jolie will be both a voice-actress and a producer in the animated feature The One and Only Ivan, currently in pre-production.

On International Women’s Day, Angelina Jolie and Senator John McCain are appealing to Americans to come together to defend human rights and American leadership in the world — specifically with regard to the recent increase in violence and atrocities being committed against the Rohingya Muslims. In a co-written op-ed for the New York Times, Jolie and McCain outline the human rights issue at hand and urge Americans and the U.S. government to take action.“Around the world, there is profound concern that America is giving up the mantle of global leadership,” they write. “Our steady retreat over the past decade has contributed to a wide array of complex global challenges — a dangerous erosion of the rule of law, gross human rights violations and the decline of the rules-based international order that was designed in the aftermath of two world wars to prevent conflict and deter mass atrocities.”Jolie, 42, and McCain, 81, cite a lack of diplomacy in Myanmar, formerly Burma, that has led to 680,000 Rohingya Muslims being forced to flee “a systematic military campaign of killings, arson, rape and other mass atrocities amounting to ethnic cleansing.”They add: “According to recent reports, many survivors are still not getting proper assistance because of a lack of funding for gender-based-violence programs. Addressing these shortfalls and taking steps to protect Rohingya refugee women and girls from further sexual violence should be a priority for the United States and like-minded countries. We must also take urgent steps to get medical care and assistance to Rohingya families in desperate need in Rakhine State in Myanmar.”Jolie and McCain urge the passing of the Burma Human Rights and Freedom Act, a bill sponsored by Senator McCain, which would impose sanctions on Burmese military and security forces responsible for the violence and also support efforts to properly investigate human rights violations.“While politics have left Americans deeply divided, we can all unite around the belief that a commitment to freedom, justice and human rights has distinguished the United States as a great nation,” they write. “Our failure to hold accountable those who commit mass atrocities and human rights abuses will lead to more violence and instability.”
Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn NOT “Talking A Lot” Or Flirting, Despite Fake News Story

A new report asserts Angelina Jolie and Sean Penn have been talking “a lot” and possibly flirting, but there’s absolutely no proof to the made-up claim. Gossip Cop can exclusively correct this fake news story. We’re told it’s untrue.According to the often discredited HollywoodLife, the two stars have been speaking a ton, and it looks like their talks are turning into “something other than just a friendship.” A so-called “source close to Angelina” is quoted as telling the untrustworthy site that Jolie has been “speaking to Sean a lot” and Penn has “made it clear” that he wants to “get to know her better.” “They are taking things slow and no matter how long it takes, Sean is not ready to give up” on Jolie, maintains the repeatedly disproven blog. The outlet’s almost assuredly fake “source” adds, “Once [Penn] sets his sights on something he’s pretty dogged in pursuing it until he achieves his aims… He’s happy to bide his time, flirting and ingratiating himself with Angelina, and he’s confident she’ll give in to his charms eventually.” Among the red flags in the article is that the blog contends its information is from a “source close to Angelina,” and yet it purports to know exactly what Penn’s plans and thoughts are. It seems the serial liars at that site forgot that its fictitious “source” was supposed to be connected to Jolie.
Gossip Cop is going to stop this nonsense right here. There’s a reason that website is universally known as HollywoodLies, and it’s because the outlet habitually makes up fabricated scenarios and fills them out with phony quotations. So, do Jolie and Penn speak over the phone or in person? And how did this possible romance start between them? Of course, the outlet doesn’t mention any of that because there’s actually nothing going on between Jolie and Penn.Comically, HollywoodLies was so busy manufacturing this bogus report, it didn’t even realize that on Friday night Jolie’s estranged husband Brad Pitt had dinner in Los Angeles with Sean Penn. The two actors, of course, co-starred together in the 2011 movie, The Tree of Life. Gossip Cop can guarantee the two men didn’t discuss Pitt giving his blessing to Penn to embark on a romance with Jolie. The fact that HollywoodLife made up this fake news story shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point. In the past, Gossip Cop has busted the unreliable site for concocting reports ranging from Jolie dating Johnny Depp and Jared Leto to her getting back together with Pitt. And for months on end, the outlet kept churning out fictitious articles about Jolie having a secret romance with a British “mystery man.” Remarkably, much like the current tale about Jolie and Penn, HollywoodLie also claimed in those articles that its information came from a “source close to Angelina.” More than a year has passed since those fabricated reports and clearly none of them were remotely true. Still, Gossip Cop fact-checked the latest claim with an actual Jolie confidante, and we were assured the new story about Jolie and Penn is yet another falsehood.
