Angelina Jolie cut a typically chic figure as she stepped out in New York following a Q&A about her new film Maria, where she revealed she planned to 'pretend' to sing opera when she first signed for the film. The actress, 47, wrapped up in a sleek black, longline coat, which was worn over a champagne coloured satin dress. Angelina accessorised her look with a pair of trendy shades, gold jewellery and boosted her height with pointed nude heels.Opting for understated glamour, the Mr and Mrs Black star opted for a simple, dewy make-up look while her sleek caramel tresses were left to cascade down her back. Angelina offered a wave and a small smile as she stepped outside and climbed into a waiting car.The stunner had been discussing her latest film Maria, in which she plays the late famed opera singer. During a post-screening Q&A following the film's premiere at New York's Film Festival, Angelina revealed that she initially planned to 'pretend' to sing opera to 'get through' the film, before eventually going on to have seven months worth of training. According to USA Today, Angelina said of first signing to play the soprano: 'I thought, "Oh, I'll pretend-sing and I'll get through this". 'Then it was very clear to me that you can't pretend opera, and then I was scared.' She then spoke of her admiration for Maria's strength: 'When I see someone who's so full of self-pity or giving up, it doesn't move me in the same way. She would try to pull herself together and move forward. I wanted this to be about what an extraordinary artist she was – she was a fighter and a deeply feeling, emotional person.' The first trailer for Maria dropped last month. The film opens in the last days of the soprano's life and looks back on all the triumphs and tragedies along the way. Callas died of a heart attack at her Paris home on September 16, 1977. She was 53.
Angelina said that roles like Callas come along 'once in a lifetime,' adding, 'I mean, it’s certainly the most challenging,' Deadline reported. To portray the opera singer, Jolie spent seven months learning six of the late singer's most famous arias. At the Venice Film Festival photocall in August, Angelina, when asked what her musical tastes were, said: 'I was more of a punk and I loved all music but I probably listened to The Clash more than most. 'As I have gotten older I have listened to classical music and opera. I think I still love the music I did when I was younger, I would still listen to The Clash.'But I think when you have felt a certain level of despair, of pain, of love at a certain point there are only certain sounds that can match that feeling and to me the immensity of the feeling encapsulated in the sounds of opera - there is nothing like it. 'That feeling that would move all of us if we were to hear it would be the only sound that would explain that pain, so I have leant more towards it now.' Angelina's latest outing was without her close friend Akala, 40, whom she's been linked to recently. In recent months, Angelina sparked romance rumours with British rapper Akala after the pair were seen emerging from her hotel in Italy during Venice Film Festival. However, sources confirmed that the couple are not an item, with an insider telling that Angelina 'is friends with him and his partner, Chanelle [Newman] who was also there'. In the wake of her bitter split from Brad Pitt, Angelina grew close with the rapper and political activist. Yet the pair do share a strong bond, with a second source stating: 'They share the same passion when it comes to social and humanitarian causes. 'They did several collabs over the years that focus on global issues like human rights. Angie speaks very highly of him.' It had been claimed by In Touch that the actress had been privately seeing the musician for 'more than a year'. However, People's source claimed Angelina is 'currently single and not dating seriously'.MailOnline contacted Angelina's representatives for comment at the time.
