Angelina Jolie said she was "devastated and saddened" to hear of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine.Nine Britons were among the 298 people killed when the plane crashed yesterday.Flight MH17 was said by eyewitnesses to have "exploded" after it was reportedly shot down by a ground-to-air missile.Hollywood star Jolie was one of thousands to take to Twitter to offer their condolences to the victims of those who died.The US has banned its airlines from flying over the region following the crash, with the White House calling on Russia to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine.Washington has also called for a "prompt and impartial" investigation into what happened.No group has claimed responsibility for the disaster, which has been blamed on separatist rebels.Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has accused rebels of involvement in the crash, which is thought to have been caused by a surface to air missile.Those on board included nine British citizens, 154 Dutch passengers, 27 Australians, 23 Malaysians, 11 Indonesians, four from Germany, four from Belgium, three from the Philippines, and one from Canada.
